You're not discussing this. You're discussing me.

In a good mood today, huh?

I still think of you every time I reach for the Trader Joe's olive oil. :)

See, here's the thing, @Ten Lubak. You have no problem with @Paladin's representation of Every Non-Gun Owner in America in Post #802, but you think by targeting just one "gun-grabber," i.e., me, you're somehow being "fair and balanced."

    Nope. Not even close.

Roxy: [after killing a Bill O'Reilly stand-in] Exactly what part of his politics do you agree with?

Frank: Less gun control, of course.

Roxy: Well, Frank, then every nut would have a gun.

85 odd years on this earth and you still haven't learned to admit when you're wrong. Sad.

    Gross. :(

I have not read paladin's post so have no idea what you're talking about. He doesn't represent me and I don't represent him. I'm just calling you out on your tired old shit. If you're going to take the dishonest stance that you consistently do, don't get so butthurt when someone calls you out on it. That's called being an adult.

See, you can't even get that right. Sad.

So you're just targeting me. Which is what I said. Thank you for confirming it. Now go stalk someone else, Flashlight.

    FTFY.

You do need a little bit more than a black-and-white binary. Otherwise, you could just as well turn the game around, where the supporter of extreme freedom for guns argues that he needs his gun to defend himself against all these dangerous people who should also have free access to guns.

    Does abiding mean murderous? source

Researchers found that states such as Montana, Arkansas, Alabama and Idaho, which have the highest rates of state-registered private gun ownership, also have the highest rates of homicide of law enforcement officers. States including Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey experience some of the lowest rates of both police officers killed and gun ownership.

As usual T.R. is talking out of his backside. Hell, the gun nuts even oppose laws which would require them to keep their penis extensions secured.

Do you keep your car secure? :chris: Someone steals your car from the grocery store parking lot - and they run someone over. Why don't you have own personal tire "boot" so nobody can drive it until you remove it?

And you would be correct! But most anti-gun folks on this thread don't know a lot of people who own and shoot guns or grew up owning and shooting guns, so they are only guessing most of the time.

Making shit up? I actually know a lot of people who own guns, including family members. I have a friend who is a gun smith, and I earned the riflery merit badge in Boy Scouts. I've mentioned such things before, and many others here who favor gun control have similar connections or own guns themselves. @oldfella1962, you are the person who seems informed by a narrow set of experiences and acquaintances.

But more to the point, when discussing something that affects life and death, it should not be a requirement that we all have intimate knowledge of the tool of death in order to oppose reckless ownership.

Yes Gul, you have gun experience. Read the thread, I never said "all" I said "most." If they don't know responsible gun owners, they can only judge by stereotypes based on the media or other anti-gun people's opinions.

"I earned the riflery merit badge in Boy Scouts." :waiting:

Imagine if a Presidential candidate used that line in the debates. It would be worse than Michael Dukakis' tank picture.

    Way worse.

Try something more like "My last custom .308 sniper rifle had a Remington action, McMillan stock, Harris bipod, cryo-quenched barrel, laser machined trigger, and a Leupold 50mm mildot scope, and it was built by a Special Forces gunsmith who was also a top expert/author in Varmint Hunter and other precision rifle magazines."

I agree you don't have to be an expert on guns but being familiar with GUN PEOPLE would be nice. Gun owners are not the monsters some people think they are. And with our increasing urban living (and getting less rural every day) a lot of people may go almost their entire lives without actually seeing a gun not carried by a cop or a soldier or a criminal. That cannot help the dialouge too much. BTW I WISH they had gun training when my son went to Boy Scouts. It's a great idea! Hell even marksmanship training in school would be great too. WE had archery when I was in HS - is that allowed anywhere these days?

That's why its important for gun owners to go to neighborhood cookouts, PTA meetings, and church picnics carrying their latest tactical arms. A lot of people don't otherwise get to see that stuff.

I think you might want to ease people into it. Maybe free tickets to local gun shows? Experts there can answer just about any question & provide any data anybody could conceive of. Maybe local shooting ranges can offer a free shooting session with free gun rental to give people exposure to guns.

Yes, actually I do. If I left it unlocked with the keys in the ignition and someone stole it and caused an injury, I would share liability for the accident.

Leaving a gun in your locked car is not the same thing: it doesn't have to be there. The car does.

Yeah, the Boy Scouts are pretty much squares ville, but nevertheless it illustrates the point that I was once fairly interested in guns and took the time to learn about them. Now if I were to post the sort of statement you just made, I would be a liar. That is you, not me, I prefer to deal with the truth.

Two of my close friends are gun nuts. I was helping paint one of their daughter's houses and noticed a handgun on the nightstand in the bedroom. I didn't comment.

Another friend I've known for 35 years introduced me in the 80s to shooting. We'd reload our own ammunition accompanied by beer and twinkies. Today he keeps gun in all his cars. His wife carries a gun in her purse. They have guns in a glass case in their house. I didn't comment.

My ex-wife's two brothers have both been injured by guns. One had his eye shot out by a friend who was showing his father's gun off. The other shot himself in the foot.

    I'm commenting now. Deal.

WHOA! So your right to drive trumps my right to own a gun? Does your car "have" to be there every single time? :chris:You can't walk or ride a bike or car-pool or call a cab sometimes to reduce the length of time your car is vulnerable to thievery? And again, you can't spend 30 dollars to lock up your car?

Your experiences are far from typical I assure you. So yes, exposure to that bumbling group would leave a bad taste in your mouth. That's enough bad gun behavior for 100 families and peer groups. Multiply the number of people you knew and had guns in the homes x 50 and you see the total numbers of people with guns (not work/career related) I knew. All totaled with all these family, neighbors, friends, etc. there were only two harmful incidents or people with multiple incidents: my grandfather shot himself (fake suicide attempt) and my step-brother is a criminal who has committed several gun crimes and been shot himself by law enforcement and obviously survived.
