I think the general thought process is (guessing, I'm not a liberal so bear with me) that the legal gun owners are enablers by keeping the "gun culture" alive and well. Because criminals never even saw the potential in them as weapons until Joe Gooberpie started shooting milk bottles from his back porch. And guys like Forbin who have more than one gun, and uses deer as mules to traffic guns into Japan. Oh yeah, the feds are all over him. Law abiding gun owners, whose weapons are used for some purpose other than they intended. If these people had practiced common sense in securing their arms, their kids wouldn't be dead or have killed others, or their guns wouldn't have been stolen to be used by criminals. Yes, I hold the purchaser accountable to some degree for the easy theft of their guns.

Then there are the law abiding gun owners that later choose to break the law and law abiding gun owners that take the law into their own hands.

Then there are the law abiding gun owners that have stupid accidents.

I would have defined a law abiding gun owner as one who would be smart enough to secure their firearms, one that never chooses to break the law or take the law in to their own hands.

Which is what the vast, vast majority of gun owners are.
