Growing up I have only know a handful of homes that didn't have guns of some type whether constantly or off & on. Granted, times and attitudes were different back then. That whole "personal responsibility" thing was pretty strong too.

BOO-YA! Exactly. But if you treat guns as taboo people will do stupid shit because they quite literally don't know just how dangerous they are.

I'd imagine that throughout our 200+ year history, guns weren't locked away, yet we survived, holy shit.

It depends on the circumstances. If you leave your gun in the glove box of your locked car while you're running into a store...especially if the store doesn't allow guns, then you've done your due dilligence as far as I'm concerned. If you leave your gun in the glove box of your locked car all night outside of a bar, at long term parking at the airport for a week, or just leave it there 24/7, then maybe not. On the other hand, if you're one of those fools with a Glock or Sig sticker on your rear windshield of your car, and ever leave a gun in it unattended for any amount of time, locked or unlocked, you're a fucking idiot.

I would say this is a fair assessment of gun storage common sense. What really messes things up for the military is we can't keep guns in our vehicles even for the purpose of hunting on post after work. Is it fair to have to leave work, drive home, then come back with the shotgun? :bang: You're burning daylight as it is!

You are so full of shit. Then again you were stupid enough to claim there was no antithetical devices installed on cars therefor there should be none on guns. Cars have door looks, ignition locks, are all registered so they can be tracked if stolen and often come with things like alarms, engine kill switches, tracking systems, alarms, and a bunch of other things. The stuff to secure a gun which comes standard is zip, Ilch, nada, nothing.

Yet suggest all guns should be secured either with a trigger lock or kept in a safe and the gun nuts will declare that a totally unreasonable thing. Frankly, not having a trigger lock on a gun should be financially ruinous to the irresponsible owned and s/he should lose years off of his life in prison as well as never get to own another again.

I saw a video (might have even been here) where in...oh, one of the Nordic countries, the cops have to keep their gun in a little safe in their car, so it's the ultimate last resort, not the first thing they reach for, like our paranoid fearful hot-head cops, and guess what?
    They never use the gun.
    They find other ways.
    Interesting.

My son's 9 mil came with a trigger lock. We have no reason to use it, but it is available. One good thing about semi-auto pistols versus revolvers. You don't have to keep them "loaded" to use in a hurry. You can pop in a loaded magazine super fast and in the dark too. Thus they are IMO safer for home defense especially with kids or senile oldsters. As long as only the people who are authorized to use the gun know where the magazines are, nobody can get hurt with the gun. BTW cops keeping a gun in a safe in their vehicle? They might as well keep their "last will and testament" in there too if that were the US.

As long as it's just him and his wife and he keeps his doors locked, I don't have a problem with it. Though five seems a bit much.

Sometimes you don't have to hunt the deer. It just walks by and you shoot it.

Are they five of the same type? I can't find his comment mentioning the number of guns. Of course for some people you need a different gun for different functions: .22 for squirrels or lengthy target shooting, 30-06 for big game hunting, shotgun for waterfowl, handgun for self defense, etc.

Well that is pretty much the only effective way to hunt deer with a bow in wooded areas. If you stalk deer they are not moving but you are - they will spot your movement long before you get within bow range. That said if you are concealed in your tree stand or blind and ready to rock it won't help you if the deer don't show up :brood: or worse yet they show up but deviate from their trail, and walk by out of range. :shakefist:Or come by in a group so you can't get a shot because you multiple sets of eyes, ears & noses to deal with "picking you off." :brood: Or somebody walking their dog comes near and scares the deer out. :brood: It's always something! It's very much a "numbers" game. You more you scout for new/better areas and spend hunting the more deer you see - eventually one will make a mistake. My problem last year was I was too picky. The shot seemed far, I didn't like the deer's body language (nervous deer jump the string) or the shot angle. THis year? The first decent shot opportunity - there are perfect shots. With a gun you can shoot different angles - with a bow you can't get through big bones, and bullets are faster than the speed of sound so deer can't react and move in time - turning a good shot into a miss. Deer can react to the fastest bow & arrow combinations made. So if you want some "holy shit I'm right next to a deer and one mistake and it's assholes & elbows out of here" you bow hunt. If you a much better shot at killing one from a much further distance, you use a gun.

Which is really much, much worse when you think about it. Cows (for example) destined for food lead a shit life! Castrated, crammed into smelly pens, then killed in a place where all your fellow cows are getting killed right in front of you! :scary: Deer (for example) come and go when and where they want to, eat a wide variety of foods (up to twenty different food sources per day!) bucks get to fuck does and fight other bucks for the right to fuck, fool hunters and otherwise point and laugh at us humans, and live a full active life up until the last minute of their life when they generally die a fast death - unless they catch a disease or something. Sounds like a pretty good deal compared to a cow.

    And awaaay he goes.

See, what you guys don't get is that not only do we not agree with your interpretation of the Second, but what we really understand, based on your own posts, are hair-trigger (wordplay deliberate) types like you and Forbin and Poodle and Captain X and every other [IMG] who's ever posted here.

For every rational gun-owner like Shoes there seem to be three or four of you.

Stop wavin' it around, put it back in your pants (yes, I know you personally don't own guns at the moment - except for your son's, which I'm sure you're just "holding" for him), and maybe we'll be a little less wary of you.

As y'all like to say "Guns don't kill people..." But hyper-vigilant gun owners sure seem as if they're looking to.

Ditto - NOW what did I do? I mentioned that different types of guns serve distinctly different purposes? BTW NONE of the purposes involves committing a crime. This is not anything unusual.
Garamet - do you have different types dishes in your cabinet? A little plate for snacks, a small bowl for cereal, a big bowl for mixing ingredients, special pretty plates for holidays? To take it further, do you have several of each type? That's the equivalent of why someone can have more than one gun. And if the person owning them never commits a crime, why does it matter how many they have? Most criminals only have one gun BTW and they steal that gun, commit the crime, then toss that gun....because felons can't have guns. So they sure wouldn't have a bunch of them. But I'm sure you knew this. :D BTW how does Shoes get off so easy? Because he doesn't own several guns (which sane people know is not uncommon)? Please, take your meds or get a higher dose before you have a meltdown.
