Yes that's reasonable. But I look at it from both sides. Once the stipulations on owning guns (extra training, limits on types of weapons, etc)kicks in the anti-gun people might not be satisfied, and we end up like Japan or England. So it's lack of trust from the gun owner side. I guess it's frustration from the gun control people because gun owners don't want to budge because once a right is gone.....it's not coming back.

Personally I feel any law abiding citizen who wants a gun should be able to get one, and concealed carry too because it's not like a concealed gun kills you any deader than one on your hip. Also concealed carry is great anti-gun people aren't freaked because "out of sight, out of mind."
And in addition to a criminal background check, a Hunter Safety card must be presented. No card, no gun, no excuses. I don't care if you just retired from the Army - everyone should be on the same sheet of music safety-wise. While Hunter Safety very much mirrors the Army safety rules, there are some differences.

I just want to point out that all of Shoes' posts in this thread are freakin' hilarious considering his avatar is a picture of himself holding a rifle while showering. And eating a cookie.

That cookie contains the secret code to all the US nukes. Chinese spies have him surrounded so he needs to eat the evidence! In other words, business as usual! If it were an action movie Shoes would say :madcookie: hmmm.......this must be a fortune cookie - and it says "you will soon tear out the heart of your enemy and show it to them still beating.......in bed."

Is it my posts that are funny, or the fact that I'm considered WF's tame gun nut? :ramen:

Yes, I'm sure some would want more. We all know people who want no guns, period. But many of us want more gun control do not want that. So if you agree to something along the lines of what Demiurge proposes, you will effectively break up the gun control coalition. That's a result you should like. And if you agree that such a policy would be acceptable and might result in more safety, shouldn't you want to do it anyway, and grab the moral high ground in terms of safety advocacy?

Your posts are funny, well-thought-out, and I don't recall your ever even mildly insulting anyone.

You're the opposite end of the gun-owning spectrum from the plethora of :ohnoes: Yosemite Sams in this place.

What's really funny is your lack of understanding when it comes to people on WF who support and defend the Constitution.

Given the context of the conversation, the words make no sense coming from Garamet. Re-do the meme with a picture of Federal Failure.

Grabbing the moral high ground of gun safety is a fool's errand. If we cut gun deaths in half today you or I might see that as a glass half full, but gun control people would see the glass half empty and belittle at your efforts and success. The gun control coalition will never stop. If we limit magazines to ten rounds or whatever and the gun death rate doesn't go down fast enough (even if the number of rounds has nothing to do with these deaths) then they want a five round limit. Come up with a one week waiting period to purchase in one state, they will say "it works in X state so it will work in Y state. Damn those Y state murderers." Bear in mind even if the one week waiting period does not work worth a shit, that doesn't matter. It's all emotion over common sense & fairness. And there will always be more US citizens who live by emotion over logic. I don't see that changing soon!
Actually though no matter how many restrictions some states have, we are still heads & shoulders above much of the rest of the world when it comes to gun freedoms. Our political system is set up with so many checks & balances (and across-the-board mistrust of the government among many gun owners) and weapons not accounted for that nothing short of a complete US takeover from a maniacal dictatorship will get rid of them. Yes, I can almost hear a few folks grumble "that's why the US is so fucked up!" but honestly all I can think is "no, that's why we are such a great nation!" We can debate and disagree 24/7 but it's still a free country. You don't like guns? Don't buy one. You don't like drugs? Don't take any. Both these things kill people. Obesity kills more than both combined - so should we ban sugar? No, if you want to be fat go for it!

And again, the argument against gun control boils down to

"I don't understand that a gun is more dangerous than a chocolate bar, so you should trust me with a gun."

    coupled, in this case, with

"I don't understand the difference between risking my life and risking my neighbour's life."

...with people like you and oldfella who don't understand the difference between a gun and a chocolate bar, and people like Forbin and "Ron Paul" whose lives won't really, really, really be fulfilled unless they can use their "chocolate bar" against an intruder.

It's not the chocolate bars. It's the paranoids who have one in the nightstand and another under the sofa and are just waiting...
