The murdered cop was a devout muslim believer, according to several online sources. Bitter irony, if true.

I must applaud you for the dumbest idea I have heard in a long time. Your tinfoil hat must be aimingi in the right direction today. That was very funny.

I agree, and I'm not sure why you were downvoted by Dickynoo, I think he's being a bit obtuse on this one since you don't actually make the case that none of these things shouldn't be said.

I think it's down to a judgement call. In the examples that you give, and in terms of religion, homophobia and so on, yes they carry risk, but they are also topics worth speaking about to fight against social injustice. At the end of the day what I have more of an issue with are those who use free speech to be downright offensive (homophobia, racism, etc) and then cry foul when there's a backlash. But what I would also say is that in some cases the line isn't always as clear and that's when we should be using the power of expression to debate the merits of actions, rather than just viewing a civil liberty as a blanket entitlement to behave in whatever way you please.

Again, not believing the story myself. But there are enough examples for such events in history  Also, the pattern is distinctively different from other islamist attacks. Real extremists don't care of they live or die. Those obviously do. Why, since there is no bigger reward than going to al-Jannah for eternal virgin blowjobs or whatever?

Oh wait, you didn't want to actually discuss anything. OK, go on then.

It's a Taliban/ISIS innovation. "Hey, Abdul, how about surviving contact with the enemy so we can keep getting better at killing them?" The old method couldn't produce any combat veterans, so they were left fighting their holy ward with people fresh out of bomb camp.

But if you get the 72 virgins anyway (when you do eventually die) as a reward then you still might as well live as long as you can here on Earth.
You've got that golden ticket that can't be taken away.

Who do you think doesn't pay their own way or "doesn't live in the real world"? The only one who begs for money on the internet is John Castle which implies he doesn't have a job and is broke but he is hardly a lefty. Ironically, it seems you are the one not living in the real world.

I don't think false flag is very likely, but I do think the Islamists have the same goal as European fascists, which is driving a wedge between ethnic Europeans and domestic Moslems. The article Liet posted makes a pretty strong case for the idea.

Yesterday I linked to some Imams that spoke out against the violence that happened at Charlie Hebdo.

Today, for the sake of balance, here's a muzzie cleric who pretty much says the opposite.

    Link

So, fuck this guy. He's got his head so far up his own ass, it's unreal.

Citizens shouldn't be at risk because you're so sensitive that you can't handle a picture being drawn of your prophet.

He kind of has a point on this bit:
but the response should be that we fight against such practices, not further restrict free expression.

Amjen Choudry is a well known cunt of the highest order. He's basically the Muslim version of Fred Phelps, creator of the now banned Islam4UK Islamist organisation and is generally rejected by the bulk of the UK Muslim population as a nutjob. I mean, this is the guy who has vocally supported the actions of ISIS and says that crucifiction is a good thing. I've noticed that he gets a lot of airtime in America from the likes of Fox News, presumably in an effort to establish the evil of Muslims.

Of course there are consequences for exercising free speech - dissent, backlash, ostracization. In some areas of the world its imprisonment or summary execution.

And of course a person should exercise good judgment in choosing the time and place to say certain things.

But mass murder? That's what sociopathic tyrants do to squash opposition and solidify their power.

Look, for far too long the western world has tolerated these islamo nutcases who issue their little "fatwas" every time they hear something they don't like. Civilized society can't function if it tolerates a situation where a group is allowed to make death threats and carry out mass slaughters.

If free speech means anything it has to cover even the most noxious behavior. How many out there would have loved to put a bullet in the brain of the Westboro freaks during one of their funeral protests? But we don't do that, because we as a society don't tolerate murder as a response to offensive speech.

So you can say this satirical magazine shook the hornet's nest and argue they brought this on themselves all you want. But once you go down that path, there's no turning back. Might as well move to communist china or submit yourself to the tender mercies of Putin.

Well, I do have archangel negstalking all my posts without any response so it is not out of the ordinary for me to have negative rep. That aside, I do not think our present society has the presence or intelligence to fully understand the nuances of pure freedom and use it for it's better purposes. This is why we need moderation, rules, and laws. I have seen free speech with no reprocussions among the brighter minds, and it was a lot of noise with very little substance.

For a time the philisophical and scientific elite were somewhat encouraged by religion. I am talking way back in the Renaissance. Now religion is almost entirely dedicated to making the world stupider and worse. Do not get me wrong, I am spiritual but unlike the monotheistic faiths mine evolves with and includes science and discovery and seeks to find answers with the ability we have to observe and use logic to understand things. That leap of faith is actually a draw for failure. It is a good place to stuff things that people do not know, and to qvoid dealing with the reprocussion of one's actions because there is always a devine safety net back there to rescue you. With extremists it goes a lot further in that invisible devine mandate that emboldens them to commit attrocities in god's name, and perhaps overcome the morals that they have through a rationalization about the opinion of someone they have no contact with or way of understanding.

It is also very true the hypocrisy they have for other people's views and ideas being something they want banned and eliminated but they their particular opinion protected and exaulted. Those people are willing to go to great lengths to silence and intimidate opposition especially when they have no way of logically arguing their point. The whole idea that we will be judged afterwards just encourages them to do what they think is right because they face a higher judge that will only do things to us after we are out of this world. It is a really great way to rationalize stupidity and prejudice.

Anyone who says Israel is "just like the Nazis" is either a liar or a fool. No one has rounded up and exterminated the Palestinians and the reality is there could be peace tomorrow if the Palestinians wanted it. I won't condemn people for taking reasonable actions to defend themselves from the world's worst terrorists who continue to say their goal is to kill every Israeli.

Hell, if there really was reciprocity between the two sides then they really would be exterminating the Palestinians. That the Israelis treat them so much better than they deserve proves how superior they are to the Arabs.

I am pretty sure that type of extremist would not view the cop as an actual muslim. Not that I would say that, but it helps to rationalize your killings to say that your opponents are not with your god. That is just the way religion seems to work when they kill the like minded.

    Every single one of them?

Not that it would have anything to do with having their property stolen from them in '48 and the remaining land they're living on systematically eroded out from under them ever since. And the wall, and the checkpoints, and crimes like Driving While Arab, Walking While Arab...

Funny how many libertarians take the side of the Gubmint on this one...

    @garamet re "stolen land"

The Arab-Israeli conflict follows a pattern: the Arabs refuse to settle, instead opting for military solutions or civil unrest, and, when that proves ineffective and the Palestinian situation declines, they scream injustice.
