I took Shotokan Karate classes for all four years in college. I had wanted to study martial arts before, but all the places around were for kiddie karate/tot tae kwan do (i.e. five-year-olds). In college the martial arts groups were made up of actual adults. I'd like to get back into it, but the only karate place in town is mostly for little kids and the college team is too far away. I tried some other kinds of karate and other martial arts while I was in college, but they were all too flowery or relied too heavily on brute force or just didn't have the exactness, directness, or discipline of Shotokan. Also shot rifle, pistol, and attempted shotgun all throughout college, but not really in a defensive way. I talked with a guy about starting an IDPA team, but I'm not too optimistic about it.
No throwing stars per se, but if you learn the proper body movements you can turn damn near into a projectile weapon.
It'd be great to take a cheap shot at the Canadian Parliament, but Lawmakers and law enforcers everywhere always make the mistake of thinking that the tools are more important than the skills. If you know the proper technique anything from a pen to a pocketful of loose change can work just as well as a "Ninja Throwing Star"
Chinese Gung Fu is very good.. if you can find a good instructor. From there its all a matter of finding the right style for you.
