So I'm seeing rumors of Joaquin Phoenix as Doctor Strange. Somebody sell me on this guy, why is Strange so adored. My only experience with him is in his Ultimate Spiderman episode. That's a fantastic series by the way, incorporates Spidey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Sorcerer Supreme sounds like a Taco Bell order. Recommend me somethin....
Okay, so the basic boring backstory, is he's a surgeon whose hands are injured in a car wreck, so he can't be a surgeon anymore. His hands still work, but his fine dexterity is gone. So, he goes on a quest like Bruce Wayne in "Batman Begins", finds an ancient mystic, and learns sorcery, and rises up to Best Wizard Ever like Harry Potter. Now, the mystique is in how Ditko drew the early comics. A big part of the story, is Strange astral projecting into dream dimensions, and Ditko drew those realms pretty much like an acid trip. So, think "Batman Begins", meets "Hellboy", meets "Inception", meets "Nightmare On Elm Street", meets "2001: A Space Odyssey".
Google (Images) "Dr. Strange Ditko art", and just imagine some of that stuff in modern CG, and tell me you aren't creaming your pants.
I don't really know Dr. Strange, so it's difficult for me to evaluate potential actors to play him. I will say this: Joaquin Phoenix is an exceptionally good actor. As long as he's "appropriate" for the vision the producers have of the character, I'm sure he'd be excellent.
Dr. Strange isn't an action hero, he's not going to be punching anybody. It will be difficult to keep the "family" vibe of the mainstream Marvel films with a character who is a master of the occult and battles demons. You'll lose a lot of middle-American bible-belters. It would be much closer to Constantine than Iron Man. I'm also not to sure about introducing this aspect of the Marvel universe into the films. I have never enjoyed the supernatural stuff in the comics.
Who would they introduce next, Damion Hellstrom, Son of Satan? You can hear the mommy bloggers and conservative media now. The Ghost Rider films have already covered much of the same territory as a Dr. Strange film would, and those films weren't blockbusters.
That's because they starred Nicolas Cage and sucked. Even the fans of the comic book refused to see them.
Ant-Man just has a storm cloud of doom hanging over it. http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/33119/patrick-wilson-drops-out-of-ant-man
Depends on the actor. They did a crappy attempt at the Doctor in the 70's, and the dude had a porno perm, and a Disco suit, and his character arc almost exactly followed that of Tony Stark in the first movie. The whole reluctant hero thing. The effects were atrocious, but it was a nice try. Anyhoo, if they could get someone like a Joaquin Phoenix, that would go a long way.
I almost wonder if they shouldn't present him as an established bad ass instead of an origin story. They also mentioned Cumberbatch, but I think we've reached Peak Cumberbatch
If they do the film with a similar feel to the Dead Girl/Dr Strange team-up a few years back, that could be good. Didn't take itself too seriously, poked fun at villains constantly getting pasted, had overtones of romance and was pretty irreverent. Leave the likes of Dormammu and the Mindless Ones 'til later.

Hey, I got one right! And how f**king confident is a studio when the first installment hasn't even premiered and they've already scheduled the sequel! I think they're pretty sure they've got a huge hit on their hands with Guardians. I'm giddy with anticipation!
These three have to be in pre-production now, if they're going to be released on those dates, given that for an FX heavy film, it takes 3 years for it to be completed. Somebody could probably figure out some good possibilities if they poked around on the right sites to see who's busy working on an "untitled project." The first one is almost certainly nearly completely cast, and is likely to start filming very soon.
They pretty much HAVE to be Thor 3, Dr. Strange, and Avengers 3. Unless they're gonna sneak Black Panther in there.
I imagine the other 2016 film will be Thor 3, and I wouldn't be unduly shocked to see a standalone, semi-redemptive, Loki movie in preparation, possibly the November 2017 one to lead in the third Avengers. It would being the three phases full circle, Loki again responsible for Thanos' agents attacking Earth.

Marvel really REEEEEAAAALLY wants Joaquin for Dr. Strange, but he's a-sceeered. http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/33687/why-isn-t-joaquin-phoenix-doctor-strange-yet
I am leery of Joaquin Phoenix. He's a good actor, but I see him as waayyyyy too weird and flaky to be a "franchise player".
