This is what baffles me. The people at Microsoft are smart. Very smart. They've made all the right moves this generation and are poised to take the lead in console sales in the next generation if they continue on this path. An always online DRM ridden console would kill them... especially since Sony is on record as saying the PS4 won't block used games.

But used games aside, I still wouldn't want an always online console that renders my box useless if my internet goes out. Rumor has it that this is the case... and this is from reliable news sources.

Microsoft is smart. They can't possibly not see the bad PR that this would bring. I find myself wondering what potential upside they see in an always online console that would give them an edge... Could they be partnering with cable companies and plan to deliver Cable TV service through an Xbox? Will it have a Coaxial cable input on the back and now they can sell you comcast/CableVision in areas that they couldn't before and therefore, these companies will subsidize the 720? Would you buy an online console for $99 and a $99/month fee for 3 years with cable TV package? If the PS4 is $399 and the 720 is $99 with a monthly fee, I just might consider getting the 720 and waiting for the PS4. I think that with an always online console, they will try to get some other companies that might find value in that to subsidze the Xbox 720 much the same way Apple did with AT&T for the iPhone. Just speculation on my part.

I hope they at least address it on May 21.

They've been subsidizing 360's at Microsoft stores already, probably with every intention of using it for their next platform.

I don't think Microsoft made every right decision this generation. They've been dropping the ball in the past year or two on the XBLA which they had been killing previously. Sony is picking up all the exclusives for the PS4, by most accounts they're way easier to work with. They could have opened up their system when the orange box came out. They could have allowed valve the ability to update their game more easily.

I'm really curious as to how they're going to rationalize always online in their console. Is it just arrogance? "These gamers will buy our system anyway."

The big factor for me is the controllers. XBox's controller's are nicer, but trying to play first-person shooters with my thumbs is a non-starter. Give me a keyboard and mouse and I'm good. That said, there are some games that I really want to play that just don't ever make it to PC, like Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noir. Bummer. :(

LA Noire is on PC. Most Rockstar games do make it to PC, but for some reason RDR was an outlier.

LA Noire goes on sale on steam from time to time, though it's only 20 bucks to buy normally. It's actually on sale right now for 5 bucks.

There's a ton of Rockstar games on steam, too. All the GTA games, bully, the midnight club games, manhunt, max payne...

IT seems that an internal email to all Microsoft employees working on the next Xbox seemingly debunks the always online aspect of the 720...

    ... Watching live TV?? :soma:

Does that mean the next Xbox will have a coaxial or HDMI input? :chris:

    Yeah, "Leaked"

I doubt it'll have a coaxial input. HD is plausible, but I assume it'll be more like the HBO stuff (I don't know too much about this, so forgive me if I'm wrong) where if you pay for HBO you can watch it through the xbox?

HD input does sound interesting, though.

When they intigrate Roku into one of these game counsels that will be the end of the cable company's profit center. Then they'll be left just selling low cost internet connections.

    I think that's MSFT's game plan. We'll know more on May 21.

New Xbox is named Xbox One. It promises to integrate all entertainment into 1 device.

Pretty interesting. Microsoft has 15 exclusive IPs and 8 of them new. This will make E3 more interesting for sure. I wonder if Respawn Entertainments new game will be one as rumored.

All in all, it looks awesome, but it's hard for me to get excited about it because I'm a gamer first. New Forza and the new Call of Duty didn't excite me much. That Quantum game looks interesting, but it's a new IP... That quite frankly can wait. E3 will make or break the next gen for me.

Just like Live. Microsoft has quite a history in the stupid name department.

    If it doesn't have MS-DOS support . . . it's failed.

No backwards compatibility is killing me. All my XBLA titles being lost bums me out. Probably gonna keep most of my digital buys on Steam instead of a console, if I even get a console that is.

Apparently, Sony's stock bounced 9% upon news of the Xbox reveal. Subsequent interviews reveal that each game will be tied to a single Xbox user account. The game will install and the disc is no longer needed to play the game. This means that if you have several users in the same household, only one will own the software. All other users will have to pay a fee to access it. I don't know if its Microsoft or the publishers who will collect that fee... but either way, that's just unacceptable.

Microsoft has seen the steambox rumours and basically made their own locked down version of one.

It seems the reaction to this Xbox One news has been largely negative. They're going to have to seriously modify these features in the end.

I've heard so many negative things...I'm going to reserve judgement until I have time to find out which ones are true. I can't believe any company would be dumb enough to do some of the things I've heard talked about.

Biggest thing for me in any game is the always online asshattery. I can understand it for multiplayer but for single player it's retarded. I'll support any console that doesn't have this and shun just about any game that does.

In a few years I think it will be standard for everyone. Always online is about one thing...DRM.

Anything else they tell you is bullshit so the masses will accept it and even think they want it.
