He's running for public office dude. Everything is fair game.

A lot of people shoot other people. Still doesn't make it right.
Don't have to. This is basic common knowledge.

Too bad. SCOTUS says what is constitutional, not you.

    Yes. And....?

Your insurance went up because you are now considered high risk. And it's your responsibility to check and make sure your payments went thru.

So have I. The difference is, I paid my restitution, learned from my mistake and made sure to never do it again. I didn't blame the cops nor the system. I simply made sure not to get in my car again when I had been drinking. There is no excuse to get in your car when you've been drinking alcohol. I don't care if you've only had two drinks your perception will be impaired when you try to drive. You can either wait a few hours(two hours per glass of beer) or call an Uber.

One of many reasons you shouldn't be drinking and driving.

My soon-to-be-ex-spouse accused me of driving drunk with the kids so I took that arrow out of their quiver by voluntarily putting an Intox-a-Lock on my car.

So while I haven’t had a DUI I also know a bit about the system.

Aside from the social stigma it is really NBD which is why I haven’t bothered to take mine out.

In WA it is .05 not .00 to start your car. At least for voluntary installs. Maybe mandatory are different. Same for the Rolling Retests (you have to blow again 5 minutes after your first go and then every 45-1:15 after that).

Mandatory installs require the installation of a camera that snaps a photo while you blow so you can’t get someone else to do it for you. Voluntary installs don’t.

The kid is right about more than drinking setting it off. Mine REALLY hates Listerine. I once tried to see how high I could blow and while dead sober but holding listerine in my mouth for a couple minutes and going right to blowing I was able to get it over .2 (nice thing about being voluntary install is there is no monitoring/penalty so I can fuck around with it).

40k Americans die a year due to automobile violence. I support blow-and-goes and speed governors on all vehicles.

I too paid my restitution and did all of the necessary things required of me. I take an Uber when I’m out drinking or stay home. I was simply telling a story of what I went through.

As someone who avoided DUI's through the grace of whatever deity controls such things and my disgust with the anecdotal abuses provoked in some cases, I am still in favor of drunk driving laws. It's not a direct issue for me anymore (been four 4 1/2 years since me last drink), but it's still a fact that drink driving is a bad thing for every person who drinks or who is in the way of a driver who drinks and for society in general. My understanding is that those "liberal/socialist" Scandinavian countries have such strict DUI laws that it's damn near non-existent.

I partially agree with @Bill Carson on this, although at the same time the National Motorists Association is kind of wacky and holds some positions on DUI laws that I can't go along with.

Setting the first-offense penalty for blowing a .08 at something that will severely hamper a person's ability to earn an income and support themselves is probably counterproductive, and a mandatory one-year license suspension meets that criteria. (That's assuming that it's a total suspension. Some forms of partial suspension might be reasonable.) And sending somebody into a spiral of "whoops, you missed this payment, you blew a .03 into your interlock device because you used mouthwash this morning, so things will just get worse for you" ... is not going to help somebody turn themselves around if they have a substance abuse problem. If anything, it will make the problem worse.

(I don't know anything about ignition interlock rules and thresholds from state to state.)

On the other hand, the NMA's positions on DUI laws are kind of extreme. They advocate for setting the impaired threshold at .12. I ran my own numbers on this calculator, and for me to hit .12, I would have to drink eight beers over the course of three hours. No freakin' way should I be driving after that.

I was able to get a restricted license to drive to work. I'm not sure if that would be possible without a lawyer or a public defender. To be clear, I have no restriction on my license and this was not recent. I do not drink and drive anymore. I'm also not advocating to change the law, but I do think people should be able to at least attempt to explain their lapse in insurance. I understand that a lot of people would probably lie. I would have been able to prove my case through bank records. Yes it may be my responsibility to make sure the payment went through, but I falsely assumed it had because I had never experienced problems with my bank up until that point and had been with that bank for a few years at that point.

Reminds me of a case in Florida where the guy tried to fight the .08 level by telling the court that since he was a hard-core alcoholic he could have a higher level BAC without being seriously impaired. I don't recall if there were films of his field sobriety test, or if there was one. I do seem to recall he got laughed out of court, but I guess it was worth a try. :clyde:

It’s worth a try, I guess. My main complaint is DUI checkpoints. I think it’s a lousy excuse for warrantless searches, even if you have nothing to hide.

So, how you planning on going out? Shooting up the boardroom of an auto company? Or trying to gun down members of Congress?

Good to see the national media settling in to their “Republicans are surging” mantra. Just remember in the Senate a tie goes to the runner. 50-50 means Joe Biden gets more and more of his judges.

    This is so fucking stupid.

Washington State has a Top Two/Louisiana/Jungle Primary where everyone from every party is on the ballot and the top two regardless of party go on to the General.

Here is what a ‘poll’ of ONE MILLION thirty three thousand ACTUAL (not Registered, not Likely, Actual) Washington voters actually marked down on their ballot and sent in on August 2nd:

    7E420D91-AE73-43EC-A44E-87C8E4AE21EA.jpeg

Keep in mind that primaries skew older/more conservative.

Look at the groups sending in money. These are folks (abortion and veterans) that Murray has been a champion for for decades. This is a back scratch.

That Fetterman-Oz debate was painful to watch. Fetterman is effectively neutered by his stroke. That plus the latest polls -- I'd give this race to Oz, unfortunately. :(

Apparently Fetterman raised $2 million right after the debate, probably due to Oz's comment about abortion

Is that money coming from PA voters, or Dems in bluer states?
