I've noticed one annoying thing about the Alert Box. It likes to alert me to all the people who quote each other and catch my post in the crossfire.

    To give an example:

I posted something. John Castle quoted it. I got an alert. Not a problem.

But then Garamet quoted the John Castle post which contained my post. I got an alert.

John Castle then quoted Garamet quoting John Castle quoting me. I got an alert.

Garamet quoted John Castle quoting Garamet quoting John Castle quoting me. I got an alert.

John Castle quoted Garamet quoting John Castle quoting Garamet quoting John Castle quoting me. I got an alert.

I'm not going any further because it's starting to get hard to follow.

I had one post but got a ton of alerts to a conversation between those two lovebirds doing their usual mating dance in the thread.

I don't want to turn off the Quotes your message box in the Alert Preferences area because I do like seeing who quoted me so I can then in turn go read what they wrote.

So perhaps a project would be to figure out a way to break the chain so a poster doesn't receive multiple alerts when others are quoting each other and that posters post is caught in the chain of posts going back and forth between other posters?

I concur, it needs to only alert direct qoutes.

    I like it.
It makes me feel all "Hoh! They're talking about me! They love my post, and therefore me! Suicide is kept at bay for another second! :polarslam2:".

Yeah, definitely annoying, especially as described here, where Castle and Garamet are enjoying their dance.

I think given his first post he already knows that. He doesn't want to have to turn it off.

I don't think there is anything that can be done about this one though. Because Nested Quotes aren't a default feature, this would have to be hand coded, which is well beyond my skill set. Also the original developer made all the variable names in Spanish (I wish I was making that up).

Well, there aren't a whole lot of other options in that regard. The best thing he can do is to disable the check box that alerts him when someone posts in a watched thread. That way, the only alerts he'll get are ones where he is liked, tagged, or quoted.

If there's not a solution then perhaps instead of quotes that noone is reading, @garamet & @John Castle can resort to the @ function instead of quotes and just annoy each other.

    You're obviously not paying attention.

Disabling the check box that alerts me when someone posts in a watched thread does nothing. Why?

Because I'm not watching any threads.

I am getting alerts because people quote me. No problem there. I like that feature.

I'm also getting alerts when people quote each other and in the process of doing that my post is contained within their posts. Problem there. I don't want dozens of alerts that someone "quoted" my post when in actuality they are just quoting each other and are too lazy too edit my one post out of their quotes.

If John Castle and Garamet were to quote each other 500 hundred times each and each one of their quotes had my one single post in it I would have a 1000 alerts when I got home.

I'll do that, then. Didn't realize the quotes would cause that to happen on the new software, and I wasn't yet hep to the purpose of the @ thing. :)

I am paying attention, I'm just giving you your available options. There might be ways around the alert box issue by adding code to the board, but it wouldn't affect just one user, but instead would affect the whole board since it would involve having to edit a css template to make it happen, and even then there's no guarantee it would work, and there are no add-ons available that would allow modification of the alert box for that kind of specificity. I am simply telling you what options you have, and how to make it a little bit better, or as best as it can be.

I can probably disable it, but it would be for the entire board.

You realize of course, that simply suggesting this calamitous possibility will likely trigger an intentional effort to make it happen by at least one of them, right?

You are probably right. But somebody will do it, I think we can count on that. If there's any justice, it will be a quote pyramid with a single entry by Uncle Albert :bergman:

    No you're not.

Your single available option you gave was of turning off watched threads and that is a stupid suggestion because I'm not watching any threads.

And you shouldn't be touching the inside of this board. Leave that to Nick and Chaos.

I gave you the best currently available option. Anything else would require significant modification, would affect the whole board, without guarantee of working, and for little benefit. As for "touching the inside of the board," that's part of what I do here.

John is also a tech admin, so yes, he can touch the board that way.

But don't worry, I'm very gentle. She wants a man with a slow hand, and a lover with an easy touch. She wants somebody who will spend some time, not come and go in a heated rush.

IT'S NOT THE CURRENTLY BEST OPTION BECAUSE IT DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

Not sure why you can't understand that disabling notifications of watching threads has ZERO to do with notifications of quoted posts. I can disable notifications of watched threads and still receive notifications when people quote me. It's two different types of notifications that have nothing to do with each other.

The only person in this thread who gave the best option was @evenflow who suggested that @garamet and @John Castle do the @ thing.

So go ride off in the sunset because your options are ponyshit and I don't want to read any more of them.

Calm down, there's no need to get apoplectic. I'm giving you the software options you have. Evenflow's idea works if those two agree to not to keep quoting as they have. If they don't, then you have no other option than the one I gave you earlier.

John did such a good job helping us move that Nick suggested we make him a Tech Admin, which we have. He's done a great job so far. Just b/c he hasn't given you exactly what you want is no reason to throw a hissy fit.

Now, as I have suggested before, if there is something you REALLY want, go to the bing and try to find the fix. You'll get better results coming in here with a solution than yelling and stomping your feet when people don't give you what you want NOW!

It's like your brain is stuck on ponyshit. The option you suggested won't work. You gave a single option. Stop saying you gave options. You gave a single option that will not work because it has zero to do with the problem.
