I laughed because calling the hotline is a joke. Also, like Mewa mentioned, they DO sometimes just put extra money on your card. And sometimes you don't get money they said you would get. It's not exactly a great system, and with all the craziness going on with our government right now, it's not unreasonable for people to assume they are about to get cut off and stock up while they can. You don't get the mindset because you're not stuck in survival mode. It's easy to say how you would have behaved when you're not the one who routinely goes hungry. And yes, I'm aware that SOME people abuse the system. That's obvious. If you feel the need to make blanket judgments about all people on assistance to make a point, feel free. I feel free to call you out on in because it's bullshit. There are LOTS of poor people who are trying to better themselves and work their way out of the system, but if it suits you to just think of us all as ghetto folks with no shame and no reasoning ability, just pumping out kids to collect them checks...well, that's on you. I didn't comment on the rest because I agree. I take no issue with your views about those who really abuse the shit out of assistance when they have other options. I just think you're awful quick to condemn the whole lot of us (those who receive assistance) based on the actions of a few, and it's frustrating enough when it's the cashier at the grocery store who looks at you like you're a piece of shit because you're using an EBT card, but it's worse when it's someone who in some way knows you.
So your immediate response it's try to distract people from the issue at hand. I guess that means any time someone brings up a white callow criminal we now have a green light to bring up poor criminals as a valid comparison.
When I started work in Japan they accidentally deposited someone elses paycheck into my account... Strangely enough I was not allowed to keep it...even more crazy is that I didn't for an instant think it was my money to go out and spend.
Mrs Albert: Also you have to remember that some states have said they will cut off EBT on Nov 1st unless the government reopens so, yeah, there probably are more than a few people panicking and trying to stock up.
No charges will be pursued. That would be instantly twisted into racism and I think you all know. It doesn't matter that these people were intentionally trying to defraud the government.
HA! Riddle me this, riddle me that.....why are all the shoppers fat? Check this out: 1. Some say that many poor folk can't get to the stores where healthy food is sold. 2. Most (if not all) Walmarts are not within walking distance of a neighborhood. 3. Walmart sells all kinds of healthy vegetables and other low calorie foods. 4. YET 40 percent of EBT dollars go to Walmart. 5. So the poor can somehow get to Walmart faster than Scottie can beam them there when the food is free. Got it!
I hesitantly agree, though I'm betting we differ on who winds up wearing orange jumpsuits. Sounds like you're being melodramatic about the situation. Not that I'm trying to diminish your own personal experiences with hunger, but I highly doubt anyone who rushed into Walmart on that day was starving. If you're receiving assistance, you're not surviving. You're existing at a level determined by some arbitrary benefactor (in this case, the government EBT program). You have no say in how much you need for food; someone else tells you how much you deserve. Also, I don't believe that anyone outside of a third-world shithole is "stuck" at some level of survival. Some may have it harder than others, but everyone has opportunities.
Really? Calling someone melodramatic isn't trying to diminish their personal situation? Honest question.....have you ever gone hungry? That's fair. Probably not a whole lot of them, since they were already getting assistance. They do give you enough to eat a basic amount of food if you plan carefully. I see food stamps as one of those opportunities. When you're not worried about where your next meal is coming from, you can afford to be a little more productive with your time. You know lots of people do work and still receive food stamps, right? Anyway, I'm guessing Wal-Mart will end up just taking the hit on this one. They made the decision to keep accepting EBT cards when they knew the limits were messed up. OF COURSE some people took advantage. How could anyone think it would be any different? This is not a personality trait limited to the poor. Give all business owners a chance to take something that isn't theirs through some loophole and see how many take advantage. I'd wager it's just as big a percentage, if not considerably more, than the percentage of people who took advantage of the EBT situation.
Arch, you seem to have a chip on your shoulder wrt racism especially as not a single person has made such a claim and you're the first to bring it up. It's has more to do with that fresh fruit is expensive and doesn't have that many calories in it so you have to eat more to get the same number of calories where as potato chips are less than a dollar for a giant bag. The cost factor certainly favors less healthy food though, as I said in a previous post, individuals could certainly make better food choices if they tried.
The SNAP website says almost 80% of recipients live in households where someone works (it might be a single mom or a husband who's wife stays home to watch the kids) so I'd say the vast, vast majority of them do work or at least those who are not children (and so can't legally work) work.
