If one is in the mode of thinking of many of today's Republicans. pretty much anything proposed by the Democrats should be opposed unless one of the following conditions applies:
1. It's something like the Sunshine, Rainbows and Warm Puppies Act that no one can reasonably expect to oppose (this probably comes close)
2. There is some concession or deal to be made that benefits Republicans
3. There is no choice but to vote for something because otherwise cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria

When one thinks of politics as a zero-sum game, any Democratic win is a Republican loss, and we can't be having that.

Looks like he was fiddling his campaign finances too - multiple cases of expenses coming in at precisely $199.99 (the limit for itemization is $200) including a stay at a hotel where the minimum room cost is $700 a night. Also rent on an apartment that he claims was for campaign staff, but neighbors say he and his husband stayed at for months.

The problem with the "all politicians lie" apologia is that lying about what a politician hopes to accomplish when they know damn well they can't or won't get it done is one thing. Lying about who and what you are and what your qualifications for office are is quite different. Not that I expect Republicans to acknowledge that since it requires nuanced, critical thinking, but that's where we are with today's (once) Grand Old Party.

If I had to go through a background check of my references and record to do my job, it doesn't seem unreasonable for government representatives to be held to a similar standard of verification.

Y'know, if a person is gonna be a crook, they should at least bother to learn the basics of forensic accounting first. So they can do it halfway competently.

Aaannnddd now he seems to be charging for tours of the Capitol and attendance of his swearing-in. Which is a violation of Congressional Ethics rules.

He might just about fudge it and claim the fee is only for the bus and the lunch, but then why are VIPs allowed to chip in $400 more?

The answer of course is that showing a spine leads directly to leaving office. This in turn raises the question of why they are so desperate to hang onto to an office which pays barely enough salary to rent an apartment in D.C. that they'll sacrifice any hint of self-respect to keep it.
