Why would he be caught when the opposing party is doing everything they can to cover for the republicans, and so is their propaganda arm of the news. This is the easiest thing to have uncovered. It is called a fucking search engine. One easy phone call could have exposed him. You would have thought someone on the opposing candidate's team would have done thirty seconds of research.

There is a reason such simple info did not come out, and that is because the dems worked with Santos to squash any mention of this. I find it impossible that all the opposing people in his district didn't spend five minutes online researching him. Not in today's world. If someone did figure this out, they just sat on it and decided not to blow the whistle and become famous, or hand it off to someone else to expose him for this huge story?

Someone with power on the dem side had to say don't print this shit until after the election when nothing can be done about it. Especially in a year when the dems needed every seat they could get, and this would have been an easy victory for them in that district.

Someone on Twitter used this as an example of what the gutting of local news has done to us.

And yes. I totally agree that said divestment and its’ sister issue of Sinclair and other RW funded media stepping in are HUGE issues for democracy.

But this is not the example. His local paper has some nine and a half million subscribers and crazy profits these last couple years.

The Gray Lady needs to be tending her own garden more than she has been. No way this should have been allowed to go down. Some real introspection needs to take place.

The whole local media ecosystem is compromised. Even when someone manages to get a good story, the rest of the system can’t amplify it or pursue it. In the past, the food chain worked pretty reliably. If a small paper broke a story, it would be picked up by a bigger paper, or the Associated Press, which would prompt the TV stations and radio stations to dive in. Now the hyperlocal small newsrooms rarely do investigative work, and when they do, the bigger players don’t pay attention.
And in smaller communities, the weekly papers are the entire foodchain, so their demise is even more consequential.

I started at a local newspaper. Locally owned and not a huge staff, maybe a half dozen people total. Today that same paper is owned by a conglomerate that owns 25 local papers. The last time I checked the staff of the paper where I used to work had only two employees and one of those is essentially a secretary/receptionist. :jayzus:

And let's be clear, things have been going downhill for local papers for decades now. Almost 30 years ago, I was friends with someone who was a reporter for a small-town paper and shit was bad then, according to him. You had to have at least some college under your belt to get a job as a reporter (not unreasonable) but the most any of them got paid wasn't much more than minimum wage at the time. Yes, we're talking about requiring reporters to have some college, give good coverage of important local events, and paying them only about $8/hr. Okay, so minimum wage was like $5/hr then, you're still not exactly rolling in the dough.

Eight bucks an hour would've been amazing when I started.

When I got laid off from that newspaper job I took one in teevee and eventually decided to stick with it. I don't remember what the hourly rate was, but I was thrilled when I found out my second teevee job paid $5.50 an hour because it was a significant bump. :(

Minimum wage 30 years ago was $4.25. I remember it because we were hiring people out of college for that amount. :jayzus:

It's a thing that happens to political parties of all stripes: They become apathetic with the status quo. For them, it's more of a social club than an actual political organization designed to get things done. The county is overwhelmingly Republican, so the state and national parties don't pay any attention to it. The county party is probably made up of people who've known one another for years and can manage to find the occasional candidate willing to have their name on the ballot (with no real expectation of them campaigning or getting elected), but that's about it. They don't have the necessary connections to do oppo research or get information to the media or voters. So, you know, a bunch of comfortable middle-class folks who are presently merely annoyed by what happens in politics, but don't see what's happening in it as being particularly threatening to them.

Seems that, as Devolder, Santos was also praised by the CEO of a company he joined back in 2020.

    A perfect fit indeed!

Santos/Devolder/Mumm-Ra The Ever-Living is not named in the SEC's case, but he did apparently keep working at Harbor City long after an investor warned him they were using fraudulent bank docs.

Prediction: Once he’s gone (maybe much much sooner), Republicans are going to point to him and this embarrassment and fold it into their culture war. See, this is why gays can’t be trusted to be part of grown up society. They’re at their core dishonest and confused.
