I saw "Barbie" yesterday afternoon & liked & enjoyed it. "Barbie" was groovy & amusing. And Margot Robbie was gorgeous & sexy as always. Do I recommend others go see "Barbie"? YES! A good number of people are doing BARBENHEIMER at the movie theater. They're seeing BOTH "Barbie" AND "OPPENHEIMER" in the same day as a double feature. Anyone here planning to do that?
I had noticed that, and now that I have looked it up I see it is a gimmick meant to promote more ticket sales for theaters. I was hoping for some weird cross connection between the two, but hollywood would never be that creative or good. anyway, 45 days until streaming. Please don't spoil the end of Oppenheimer for me. I am wondering if he lives through the explosion.
The movie was fun, but the ending without spoiling is...not what I expected. Not good or bad but... different. Definitely loved the nods to the various types of Barbies in this. Was surprised they were willing to acknowledge Earring Magic Ken's existence. this is also the first performance from Will Ferrell that I've enjoyed since he was impersonating Bush for SNL, and any movie that makes him tolerable is a win in my book.
Today I learned that the creator of the Barbie doll had two children, and their names Barbara and Kenneth. Which means that Barbie and Ken were named after siblings. Anyway, it's no surprise that Ben Shapiro and his fellow chuds would be deeply offended by a satire of traditional American gender roles, but (a) the Ken doll was literally created to be a counterpart for Barbie, so it makes sense that in Barbieland all the Kens would lack their own identities, and (b) the movie apparently ends with Barbie encouraging Ken to become a strong independent man and find his own identity, so ... that should be empowering, right?
I'm betting this is not the first time Ben Shapiro has tortured a Barbie doll. But it might be the first time he's done it without masturbating simultaneously.
Anyone have a mirrored link to his review because this one seems to be getting ripped to shreds even more than his usual shit does
Okay, Mattel, good job with Barbie; now here's what you do next. I mean, besides Barbie 2. Not He-Man. Enough with He-Man. You keep developing it, then it collapses, then you develop it, and it collapses, over, and over, and over, for 30 years now. Stop it. No, your next property..*drumroll*...Mad Scientist. Mad Scientist was Rick before Rick. The kids'll love him.
I worked at Toys R Us. I did every job at least once, so I stocked the Barbie aisle. Quite a few times. That's WAY more exposure than this movie. Nothing happened. Pink is just a color. Dolls are just plastic. It's putting boxes on shelves, just like the board games. If it's not in the dolls, and it's not in the pink, then conservative men are admitting to being scared of the imaginations of little girls. Which...sounds about right.
"Stocking the Barbie aisle" could be a euphemism, but Margot reminds us in the movie that Barbie has no aisle.
The real question is "Why would anyone besides a child who loves playing with Barbie's want to see the movie? Also, I did listen to one critic and every situation in which he called out as being "anti-man" is exactly how women have been portrayed in movies for a hundred years. Any man bitching about this movie needs to get a fucking job and get off the internet.
