I think it’s pretty clear that this thread is no longer about the movie and is yet another meme thread.
Hardly surprising. Since the 80s, anything marketed to/for children is a gold mine. Any adult crying about this movie - for or against it - is an excuse to bitch about "the other" political side. The children do not care. Apparently, neither do the actors. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, by all accounts, had a fun time working on the movie
TIL that She-Hulk once admitted she found Spider-Man sexy when he was in the black suit and now I'm wondering why he doesn't wear it all the fucking time even if Venom exists. Black Cat liked it so much she made him a normal fabric version of it, FFS. It's unlikely to ever happen but if a woman ever told me I looked sexy in ANYTHING, I would buy fifty copies of that outfit and wear them every fucking day until they needed replacing. Did Venom scare MJ or something so Pete doesn't want to hurt his wife? Not that she's his wife at the mo. And has powers, apparently. And might go Scarlet Witch?
The movie was good, and I laughed a lot at it. It is very self aware of the image of Barbie being unrealistic and a problem with body image and promoting unrealistic and sexist ideas. If you watch it without care for those problems, it is fun. However, the reality is this whole movie is a huge attempt to retcon the problems with Barbie and it never really does anything to really do much about it aside from saying you are playing with Barbie wrong. They bring it all up and say some great things about being yourself, and women can be what they want. They make a statement that you shouldn't just be eye candy and everyone is beautiful. It isd hard being a mom, a woiman, and having to live up to unrealistic ideals in a male dominated world. Then the entire movie is just pretty unrealistic attractive people. Even the emo girl who is giving barbie shit for being barbie becomes another pretty little barbie. Barbieland is this imaginary place where women can be whatever they want to be, and little girls can escape their future as women in the real world with this fantasy, and in the end the real world never gets effected. Everything still sucks, but you can buy an unrealistic representation of being a woman that will make you feel like shit for not living up to that perfection, and mattel admits this all exists as that, but they admitted it so problem solved and buy a fucking Barbie or ten. The problems with Barbie magically goes away when we just admit they exist and do nothing. But really who wants to buy flat footed emo depression barbie anyway? The movie does say all these things. Everyone dance party!
Yeah, Hollywood has an issue with "unrealistically attractive people" to the point that "Hollywood Ugly" is a TV Trope. Who was the last really butt-ugly main cast character in a Hollywood flick? I mean in terms of beer googles, a ten-pinter? Edit: They've renamed it Hollywood Homely, or perhaps it always was?
I saw Rhea Perlman in the credits so I was waiting for her. Her big character Carla was not hollywood homely. That was decades ago. They did not let her be Carla level. They plastered all sorts of make up on her. The whole message of be yourself gets lost under tons of make up. They are admitting that the materialism thing is a problem, but then they kept on being materialistic. Of course they are not making goodwill barbie, despite the reality I know many women who sewed their own barbie clothing, and that there were off brand packages of lots of outfits because parents could not afford to get their girls all the stuff. My mother talked about learning how to sew because she made her own clothing. I remember my mother trying to teach my sister how to sew because she wanted more clothes despite having a huge bag of the off brand clothing. I get Mattel doesn't want to get into promoting off brand or do it yourself merchandise, but that seems to be a thing with Barbies. Why not promote some real lessons to offset the materialism angle. One of the best things about doing crafts like sewing is you start to learn if you learn crafting you start to learn you can just do things for yourself. You do not have to wait for the package from Mattel.
The budget for Barbie was $100 million. It’s taken in over $1.4 billion. Gonna be real interesting if WB tries to claim it didn’t make a profit.

I could be wrong, but the taco guy looks like Aaron Stanford from 12 Monkeys. The black dude looks familiar too.
