There's no need for this kind of heavy handed crap. This is exactly why we are here and not there, because we reject the idea that people can't handle a bit of criticism or playful flaming when discussing Star Trek.
I'll talk to Paladin. Meanwhile, you have a shiny new thread and I have made it known to certain individuals that my patience is at an end.
Get rid of the mods and let the rep system do all the work. Those who get enough negative points get auto-banned for a certain amount of time by the system. For example, 1000 negative points = 2-day suspension 10,000 total negative points = 1-week suspension 50,000 = permaban
Paladin caved and helped Dayton shut down another discussion about nuTrek. Credit where it's due to Dayton, he totally has some of these mods owned.
How about for every two or three successive neg reps you give to a particular poster, you get one automatically by the system. That, along with other tweaks, will help discourage rep wars.
could we get some new tags in the pip lines while we're on about rep? there's multiple brokeback mountain puns for fuck sakes... humour relevant to this decade would be nice.
If we're arguing for free speech, letting the mob take it away by neg-reps is just as bad as letting the mods take it away.
Only for low rep earners/posters. The more popular kids would have more than enough rep stored up for it not to matter that much.
Well, I'm glad Paladin waited until he could marry Dayton to lose it. It's always more magical to lose it to someone special on your wedding night.
Members are members, with some members volunteering to lend a hand. That's about it. When it comes to staff stuff, I spend most of my time releasing Shelter Threads, responding to editing requests, and occasionally sorting threads. And in this instance I'm responding to a Help Desk thread, but that's not really a mod thing. To me it seems obvious what's going on, and if it's clear to me I've no doubt it's obvious to other members as well. We're all adults here, and this isn't exactly rocket science. So how do we want to handle this ongoing scenario, do we - Revel in pseudo outrage? Play BBS Lawyerball? Goof on staff folk? Ban somebody? Use it to advance a personal agenda? What's the goal here? Let's say it's discussing the latest two Star Trek movies without being trolled. Okay, how should we go about accomplishing said goal?
The goal is not having the third try at a STiD thread closed. I'm okay with Dayton trolling these threads, but if it's a problem with he staff, they should warn or ban him, not close the thread. That only plays in to Dayton's hands. As for your description of what staff do, it sounds like that is only required when you have a staff. Without a staff, there's no A51 thread to release, etc. So what's going on? There's a mainly do nothing staff that occasionally steps in to threads and makes a mess of things. How is that useful?
Yeah, that was it. Didn't have anything to do with people refusing to behave in a Media Central forum. As big a troll as Dayton is, you all played into his hands. I advised you--repeatedly--to keep it civil or I'd shut the thread down. You didn't. I followed through. Dayton doesn't own ME. He's owned YOU.
Nice try, but we didn't mind the trolling from him. His success was in co-opting you. Leave the threads alone unless personal info is used in it.
As a response to his antics, sure. But look, you have two choices as the folks in charge. You can ignore the complaints or you can act on them. Neither idea should point toward thread closings. Do you agree it's trolling? Then issue warnings. Do you disagree? Then say so. But drop the bullshit that says yeah, it's a troll, but we can only deal with it by taking down the platform for everybody. Really, is that the best you can do?
