I know I would be perfectly happy with something akin to Scandinavian-style democratic socialism, where there is not a centrally planned economy, but there is an adequate basic safety net, adequate schooling adequate basic health care. It would have to be adjusted to factor in potential (partial) solutions to racism, our particular other historical and other quirks. I would even be happy with something that is more in keeping with our current system but where one could truly say that there was equality of opportunity such that anyone who wanted to put in the effort had a reasonable chance of improving their lot, and there were reasonable limits to how much wealth one could acquire or pass on.

Is anybody here really advocating that? Most progressives I know have Bachelors & Masters degrees. They make more money than the conservatives in my circle. Stands to reason that a centrally planned economy would hurt the progressives more than the conservatives.
Conservatives being paranoid that we're secret violent commie revolutionaries is an act of projection. Lying about their violent impulses is what they do. How many times have the "law and order" types turned right around and committed crimes? I've lost count. As for "central planning" admiring dictators is what Trump just did for 4 years, thus by transitive property what Trumpers did by cheering him on.
That isn't meant to be an excuse not to try. No significant effort carries a guarantee of success. But...I can virtually guarantee you will not improve your lot if you don't try to do something to break out of it. I'm not insinuating anything: I'm stating that if you're not satisfied with where you're at, you need to look for opportunities to improve. As the saying goes: when you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got. For people near the bottom, it isn't (necessarily) a matter of working harder. If you've got two full-time jobs, you're already working about as hard as anyone could ever be expected to. Of course, if a poor person can work harder, they might be able to move themselves ahead by doing so for at least a little while. If a person works some extra hours for a few months, that might (as an example) let them get a car to drive to a farther but better-paying job. Or it may get them enough money to take a night course. Apart from working harder, it's a matter of (1) seeking opportunities, (2) making better use of the resources one does have, (3) taking on more responsibility, (4) learning/acquiring skills, (5) reducing or eliminating counter-productive activity or unnecessary expenditure, and (6) avoiding situations that make success more difficult.
