Please Unban Rob Matter

Without knowing what that server is, no, I can't. I would be interested to know what it is. I just think that the odds of me finding someone on a board they have been registered at since 2001, inviting that person here, having Elwood not approve them, ask me about them, then approve them, and then ban him the night he's drunk and posts a billion drunk threads reeks of bs.

IP ranges change. They are sold and leased all the time. Rob Matter is a good poster at the other board I know him from. He was a good poster here.

What do you mean by private, limited server? Are you talking about a college campus?

Because that could include several thousand people.

Like I said earlier, my office ip would show hitting this site for me as well as for some of my employees who browse this site occasionally (mostly when I email them links).

Elwood's quitting anyway, why not give Rob a shot regardless ?

He shouldn't have to explain anything. You and the others should be explaining on the other hand why you flat out ban the guy simply because he's on the same IP as some other person.

Could be they go to the same school or a million other things.

To recap for the n00bs:

CheekyMonkey was a chick that first came on here with a huge catfight with Vandy over some guy. Vandy wanted her banned but we all thought she was pretty cool. She flirted with a couple of the guys here, including Elwood, and some of said guys took it waaay too seriously. Then, for reasons not known to anyone really, one night about a year and a half ago she flaked out and made a post about some guy she met online that claims to be a cop but really isn't.

Although no names were mentioned, the staff decided she was talking about Elwood and promptly banned her. They also banned another poster that I guess she was dating IRL. The Party Line was that the whole post was a complete lie and fabrication--but that CM and GoldenEye needed to be banned to prevent them from revealing any personal information. Taken together the whole thing stunk.

But its Elwood's board, so Elwood can ban whoever he wants to.

Then, 6-8 months ago some guy named PhilR started posting here. After a couple months of posting, Elwood decided he was CheekyMonkey and banned him. Not that PhilR acted at all like CM or said anything about CM or gave any hint that he was going to reveal some sort of secret, classified information about Elwood.

Now Rob Matter is banned and I'm guessing he's pretty much fucked. Because there is no arguing on this one.

And you know the irony? CheekyMonkey has an account over at TrollKingdom. If she were really going to reveal some terrible, deep, dark secret about Elwood, she could've done it over there a year ago--at a forum full of trolls and ne'er-do-wells.

That's exactly what I've been thinking.

Oh. Almost forgot. When the CheekyMonkey ban went down Elwood was "on a stakeout" or some thing for, like a week, so the staff had to sit on their hands and just say " There's nothing we can do until he gets back and we can't tell you when he'll be back because that's sensitive."

This time he's...deer hunting? I guess he didn't go anywhere for a week when he banned Phil so maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I dunno... It seems funny to set everything up to hand the board to someone and then, 48 hours before the changeover happens, drop a turd in their lap.

Hmmm..... doesn't look like Elwood is going to go out on a positive note.
I say just un-ban everyone, if the board is really getting a new owner I don't see why everyone shouldn't get a fresh start.

Look...I don't know how many times or ways to say this so it penetrates:

The overall post was a fabrication....but it contained elements and personal details that Elwood had told CM, not over e-mail, not in PM, not in a hidden forum....but on the telephone.

Not only did she post personal information, but personal information that was given to her off the internet entirely.

She made threats before she actually did it..she was told repeatedly not to do it...she said some pretty nasty shit over PMs to people involved in the mess....she then proceeded to follow through on her threats.

Posting personal information from off board is a no-no and a bannable offense...this was obtained from an even more private source and hence even more egriegious.

Banned people are not welcome back and their duals are dealt with when found. Now I am not privy to what happened exactly here...I am sure Elwood will provide more info later....but CM earned and deserves her permaban, or I would have been all over Elwood about it myself.

I am sure this will be sorted one way or another soon enough.

They could be one and the same which is the point.

You know this is an age old discussion. I remember this same thread at Trekbbs back in 2001, and later at Terran, and later at EFCL and later at Slipstream and later at Exisle .... etc, etc.

To my knowledge, NOT one of these 'are they or aren't they' cases has ever been solved.

But let's face it, this place is built on the Trekbbs ideal and I've seen Chris lock out entire IP ranges in the name of keeping out unwanted posters. I still don't think anyone using a 'rogers' IP address can get on Trekbbs!

So I guess you can decide how much like Trek you really want to be.

Personally I say give Rob a chance. If its really this aweful cheekymonkey person than it won't be long before they show their true colors, then you can ban them.

I know Lanzman's still considering it, but in the interest of Wordforge tradition I'd like to bluster my way into this thread and give my two cents or three cents or whatever I have left in my intellectual wallet.

Rob Matter is pretty much a complete unknown to me. I don't really read his posts, not out of any sense of ideology, I just don't read many of his posts. However, he didn't strike me as a bad poster or someone with an ulterior motive, and if Apostle recommended him then he has a history with him, and Apostle's a trustworthy soul, so my own thoughts are to give him a chance and let him back in.

Folks, I don't mean to harp on a point, but the fact that Elwood let Rob in while he was sober, and banned him while drunk says a lot.

This is a good guy getting drunk and making a mistake.

Guilty until proven innocent sure is a fun thing.

Holy shit! How small is that town CM comes from anyways? I have a difficult time believing Rob Matter is CM or phil_r. Especially since apostle has known him since 2001.

The Wordforge dual detector has been extremely fuzzy at times, and I'd take it with as much grain of salt as a polygraph or a used car salesman.

The CM banning was obvious, especially if she was acting like a psycho. The phil_r ban was a bit more controversial, but in light of the fact that CM could have used his account to carry out her threats, it was at least understandable.

Rob Matter has made 336 posts, and I doubt he's going to start revealing personal information on the 337th post. If this were a malicious person, why would they wait so long? Why not do it at post #1?

Seriously. This entire thing was caused by alcohol. There should be a rule - no admin decisions while drunk. Self-imposed, of course.

I know who would be banned next if Elwood hadn't sold the board.

Well when I was banned I couldn't see ANYTHING while logged in. Nothing, just a 'you're banned' box. I had to log out to read any threads or just to see the board.

He started a drunk thread. Rob replied. Elwood then banned him. Like five minutes later.
