I’m not sure what a verse commanding Mormons to ride bikes and go door to door and be annoying has to do with what you’re saying.

As I have hinted at in other immigration posts recently I fear that the problem is a complete lack of understand about just how complex immigration is and why most of the public (not just in America) and politicians don't really understand it. They think it's one size fits all.

The reality of immigration is not what you hear from the media and politicians. It is far more complex. The danger is that every type of immigrant is lumped together. Everyone is an "illegal" or is coming for nefarious purposes. Even when it comes to the US Mexico border it is not as simple as you are being told. While I am fully supportive of the need for immigration control and laws, I cringe whenever I see the dispassionate rhetoric over illegal entrants. Sure, they are breaking the law from a US perspective, but nobody stops to consider why. Some will indeed by criminals. Others will just be trying to give their children a better life. Some will be fleeing extreme poverty, disease, severe crime or personal danger. We, as westerners, have always been arrogant when it comes to considering that. Many of us sit here with superior lives, including better living conditions and no real threat to ourselves and our families, and casually wave away and dismiss these people as if they are inferior to us and who are entirely motivated by a desire to exploit us and our country. No, in the vast majority of cases they are just trying to improve their lives of their families or themselves. To stand a chance of getting the best out of life. That is human nature, and there isn't a person on this board who would not try and do the same if faced with unfavourable conditions back home.

Even more alarming is that I understand asylum seekers are being turned away and that some of the children being separated are being separated from asylum seeker parents. Now, as I tried to explain to the bigot @Dinner a couple of days ago, if you are entitled to asylum then you are not illegal. What's more under the 1951 Refugee Convention the US is obliged to consider fairly the asylum claim of anyone who makes it. An asylum claim does not an illegal entrant make. The person will only become "illegal" as an overstayer once the process of claim and any subsequent appellate process, including any referral to the courts they might be entitled to as part of that structure, is exhausted and they have not been successful in acquiring asylum/refugee status. The reason it is done is because in order to obtain asylum one most prove one of the qualifiers apply, such as persecution for race, religion, membership of a particular social group and so on. Therefore if someone claims asylum we, as a compassionate society, have to presume they are telling the truth about their danger and persecution until we can assess their cases properly and determine whether or not claim is valid. The reason we do it this way is to give the benefit of the doubt. The alternative would be to risk sending a person genuinely in danger to their deaths or to harm/persecution. Turning asylum seekers away at the border, as Trump is said to be doing, is a flagrant breach of the Refugee Convention. You cannot sufficiently assess an asylum claim in a few minutes at a border crossing. You also also denying access to independent legal advice and representation, the courts and to any effective appellate process. So if anything is illegal, it is that.

With all these considerations, where does a child stand in all of this? It's all very well being a dispassionate slime ball like @Dayton3 and then thinking you're clever for it. But that just shows a shitty, selfish attitude. Whatever one thinks of the parents, whether they are "illegal" entrants, asylum seekers, overstayers or whatever else. Whether they are economic migrants or refugees, the children do not understand what is going on. They need the support of their families. What I have seen over the past couple of days is a disgrace. Truly shocking and below what I thought America was capable of even under Trump. It has made me so angry. Children at least as young as eight to ten years old literally being kept in cages and being forced to lay on the floor with foil blankets. Toddlers being separated from their parents. At what point does "zero tolerance" become inhumane? I would say this. Whatever you think of the parents a child needs his or her parents, especially in times of trauma like this. The mental damage being inflicted on these children, through fear, fright, loneliness and uncertainty, isn't something you can wash away, and it is not simply you can simply ignore by cold heartedly saying "it's all the parents' fault". No, the decision to lock children in cages is an American choice, not a parental one. Where is the basic human compassion for a child??

Sadly, this just proves yet again that America in the age of Trump no longer deserves to be regarded as a civilised nation that upholds or even recognises basic human rights and western values. Trump and every person even remotely complicit in putting him in the White House or condoning of this sort of shameful behaviour is an insult to the foundations on which America was built and the basic human values all our forefathers fought for 80 years ago.
