I would not kill anyone over property, unless, they threatened me or my loved ones with physical violence. At least, I like to think I wouldn't. Sometimes I fear that if someone was taking what's mine (something big, like my car), I'd freak out and kill them. But that's more mental illness than philosophical position.

I trade hours of my life for my property. Stealing it is stealing bits of my life. Lethal force is fully justified to retain it.

Well, there you go; UA thinks he lives in the movie "The Dark Crystal".

Except in his version, instead of healing the crystal, he holes up in a cave with a crossbow.

I mean, let's be honest. This attitude will probably just get you killed. Not saying that I disagree, necessarily, but if you escalate a situation like that, you're not guaranteed to come out on top. That's why it's dumb to chase a fleeing shoplifter. Might be satisfying to catch them, but they might also stab you.

And if someone isn't threatening you directly, why would lethal force be morally justifiable? That's just sick.

You are entitled to your opinion.

What you are NOT entitled to is other people's stuff. And yes, I will stand in the way of someone stealing from me, on the off chance the coward shitbag does it while I'm around.

I don't think anyone is saying that it's okay to steal, just that it's not morally justifiable to kill over it (legal justification depends on the jurisdiction, I imagine). My personal opinion is that it's only morally justifiable if someone is threatening you or others with bodily harm. If someone is trying to rob your house and runs like hell when you confront them, you are not in the moral right when you chase them down and kill them. If they come back with a gun to rob your place, you are (unless they surrender to you and comply while you wait for LEOs). The mere act of attempting to steal your stuff does not give you the moral right to kill, in my opinion. Your property is not worth a human life--that's why we have insurance and the like.

Fun fact: If you burn down a Wendy's, Wendy Thomas herself feels the pain through the powers of voodoo.

given you're possibly the only person here living a more bare bones, spartan existence than me... what property are you worried about having stolen?

Like, if someone really wanted to steal 50 lbs of 20 year old lego or a four year old desktop, they're welcome to it.

I'd wager the most portable possession worth over $500 you have is a handgun...

Dicky is right... you're just hoping for the day you get an excuse to shoot somebody.

OTOH, grocery stores here have jacked the price of food beyond what average earners (let alone their employees) can afford... is it wrong to steal merchandise from profiteers?

I'm not going to shed a tear for some evil big box retailer getting ripped off, but neither am I going to be the least bit sympathetic (go ahead and clip it right there, Diacanu) when that same store closes and the locals start wailing about "food deserts."

I've got five big box grocers and abotu 20 mom and pops within 1/4 mile. Not too worried.

speaking of big boxes... how do you feel about them price fixing as part of the profiteering?

I dislike it. Am I going to starve or schlep across town to pay twice the price at some small, family-owned operation? No, and neither are most of you.
