Wife and I have been watching cable TV series on Netflix. Streaming or disc, doesn't matter. Over the last year and a half, we've watched The Tudors, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Big Love, Mad Men, and Sons of Anarchy. We've enjoyed all of these. We just started on Deadwood, which we'll probably watch to the end. Oh -- I watched the Sarah Connor Chronicles, too, and we're up to date on Game of Thrones. The Borgias is on my DVR, but I'm not sure we're going to like that one -- there don't seem to be any "good" guys. Can anybody recommend anything we might be missing?
Burn Notice, Castle, Leverage, White Collar, Nero Wolfe, The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr., Top Gear, just to name a few.
The Sandbaggers, Callan, True Blood, Monk, Adam-12, Crime Story, Archer, Corner Gas, Dead Like me, War of the Worlds, Tales of the Gold Monkey, Profit, and Jack of all Trades.
Current shows? Justified Castle NCIS (if you like that sort of thing) Rubicon Rescue Me (so I've heard) Not on anymore, and you might need a high tolerance for early cancellation here: Nowhere Man American Gothic Dead Zone Space Above and Beyond Moonlighting (how far back are we going here?) Boston Legal (Denny Crane!) Picket Fences There's a lot of stuff i like, not sure how much of it is on the same level as the shows you mentioned in terms of heavyweight cable drama stuff.
Lots of good suggestions. I think we like stuff that's a little more serial. I actually watched and enjoyed the first season of Justified, though I realized early on that it was a lot like "a TV show." My wife thought it was boring. Dead Like Me is in my queue. We started on Rescue Me but my wife didn't like it. I think I'll give it another try because it's had such a long run. We also watched Nip/Tuck up until the middle of the second season -- it's still in my queue, unfinished. I watched an episode of Burn Notice, and it came across like a typical primetime show. To give you an idea of what we liked, we loved Six Feet Under -- devoured it, really -- and Dexter season four is probably the most suspenseful TV I've ever seen. Big Love was great until the final season. I only saw a few Picket Fences back when it aired, but I remember it being very good. I seem to recall liking Northern Exposure around the same time, and Thirty-Something before those. I'll put Rome on the list. I probably watched half a season of True Blood. Wife didn't like it, and I heard from current viewers that the later seasons were just getting more bizarre and bloody.
Last weekend HBO started rerunning Season 1 of Boardwalk Empire, leading up to the start of Season 2 in September or October. Good stuff!
You might Enjoy HBO's John Adams miniseries or the Jesse Stone film series with Tom Selleck. Others to consider Monarch of the Glenn and Garrow's Law.
I'll second Rubicon (damn AMC for canceling it after only one season! ), and add MI-5. (Okay, so I like spy stories.)
the Wire~! THAT was the one I was trying to think of - I haven't seen it but I've probably seen "best series ever!" said about that than about any other show.
what happens on pay channels is irrelevant to me for practical reasons, else i would have seen The Wire by now
