My dad told me the same thing happened when he was in the Army in the late 50s/early 60s. He's 80 and still hasn't smoked a day in his life, though he did grow up around a ton of secondhand smoke from my grandfather, who died of emphysema in his mid-70s.

When I went through basic training, there wasn't any smoking allowed but we'd smoke in these portable buildings where there were pay phones for us to use to call home.

Projection. You've bet your worldview on Trump getting re-elected, so you assume that I (and anyone who doesn't toe the Trump line) feel the opposite. Go ahead and look it up, you'll never find me guaranteeing Trump will lose or that I will take some sort of stupid action (leaving the country, committing suicide, going into therapy ) if he wins...oh that's right you can't be bothered to look up stuff, you just go by your feelings.

I'm not betting my "worldview" on Trump getting reelected - I just think he's the (much) better choice to lead the country - at least from the choices that have been presented so far. I hope you don't leave the country - I want every American to share in the bounty of success that's coming due in November. You deserve a break - you do live in Idaho so you've suffered enough!

that you're stealing his oxygen? speaking of I heard Trump is going to encourage (hell mandate!) a 5,000 percent increase in coal production that will cause air pollution of biblical proportions! You better run to Canada while you still can!

Lung cancer is one of those things that often doesn't manifest symptoms until it's very late. Pancreatic cancer is a similar disease, where, by the time you begin to manifest symptoms, it has already spread to multiple organs.

Lots of people like to make fun of Steve Jobs because he opted to spend the year after his diagnosis attempting to treat his cancer with things like "juice cleanses." What they don't realize is that the only reason his cancer was caught when it was is because he was undergoing an intensive physical as mandated by his insurance company. Due to this, it was found far earlier than it would have been in the average victim. If you look up the average life expectancy for someone who has the specific type of pancreatic cancer that Jobs did, you'll see that he lived about as long as anyone does with that particular form. Had he opted for treatment immediately, he probably would have only bought himself an extra year or two, at most. And the bulk of that came thanks to a liver transplant.

It is entirely possible that Rush has known that he's had lung cancer for a considerable amount of time before this and that the only reason he revealed it now is that he knew he was going to be the focus of media attention (because let's face it, he's not really been the focus of the news for some time) after getting the medal at the SOTU address. So, to head-off the topic, he came public with it beforehand.

Oh, and while smoking most assuredly does cause lung cancer, it is not the only thing that does so, and it is entirely possible that it was a combination of things, including smoking, which led to him getting lung cancer. It's also possible that if he's still addicted to opioids that this masked symptoms which would have revealed his condition sooner, and had it been caught earlier, he might not be facing his own mortality at this moment. There is no way for any of us to tell.

I will say this, as someone who has had pneumonia, having trouble breathing is not the way that I would wish for anyone to go. The cliche is that it is "the old man's comfort," meaning that it is seemingly peaceful, as you slip into a coma due to an inability to breathe and then quietly die. This is bullshit. You are desperately gasping for air, while you're still conscious, and in tremendous suffering that you have no idea of when it will end. If one were to find themselves in a Mad Max type scenario and contracted pneumonia, unless you've got access to antibiotics, the only humane thing to do is to kill that person as quickly as possible.

Let us remember that Limbaugh is a man who fought tooth and nail against medical care for poor and middle class people. He will fight until he cannot breath anymore against things like Obamacare and any health care reform for people who might be able to be cured to have a long and drawn out death by cancers and other painful ailments. We have the ability to treat those people and save some while giving some of them improvement on their death beds, and Limbaugh hates that. This man wishes the painful death he will have on others. he is not saying he is wrong, apologizing, or changing his cruel and evil tune on his death bed. He is cackling until his last breath for his nasty hateful listeners.

He is still spewing hate at people like Bernie Sanders, elizibeth warren, and all the other people fighting for health care and comfort for millions and eventually billions of people who will suffer from ailments like this. He is going to accept a gold star from trump for his fight against all these people instead of reflecting on his cruelty and immorality and refusing a decoration of hate and spite given to him by the scumbag that is the US resident. I am not surprised by any of that given who Limbaugh is as a person.

With the End of limbaugh we have a huge nail in the cauffin of the right wing Nazi hate machine. He is and has been their biggest hate Icon of their last couple of decades. He has pushed horrors on people and attacked anyone with decency and caring while driving the hate machine further because of his existence.

Good riddance and I still hope it hurts. Every breath he gags and gurgles on is appropriate. Every cough and every struggle he has is deserved. There is no justice, and there is no karma because anyone can suffer from these things, and coincidence is just giving him a hard death while evil people have good things happen to them, and good people die painfully. It is not cosmic justice for him, but it is amusing to me. In the end the reality is he has brought the fate he has on people who cannot afford the treatments and comfort he can in his dying days in a much more painful way.

For lung cancer specifically, I can only think of one single person who was diagnosed with in and was still after six months later. She was diagnosed...oh, early last year, I think?

But Muad was coughing blood in mid-July, got diagnosed officially in August, then gone by October. He was officially moved to hospice care back home the day before he died.

Pancreatic cancer is the one illness where I'd give away everything I owned and hand my dog off to his favorite human friends before blowing my brains out. Wouldn't even bother wasting time on chemo. Given a second aunt--one that didn't smoke and do every drug under the sun like her sister the chain smoker--its a decision I may have to face down the road.

Not sure exactly when my Dad took up smoking, but I do remember him saying that the guys in boot camp (Navy) got smoke breaks, and if he hadn't started before boot camp he was a smoker when he finished.

Then he was a two-pack a day guy his whole life right up until the big cornorary- when he was only 51, the same age I am now.

Had a former Marine co-worker who died of lung cancer as well, so, as Forbin also attested, it IS possible to die from it.

This woman survived lung cancer by 11 years. I know of someone who had it and managed to survive for at least 5 years after being diagnosed with lung cancer, and that was in the 50s! It really depends upon the type, the cause, and your genetics. My mother smoked for a number of years and quit 60+ years ago. The docs found some spots on her lungs a couple of years ago. She's never bothered with a follow-up AFAIK.

yes my mom had two spots on her lungs a few years ago. With modern medical science they removed the trouble very easily - and then she went right back to smoking. :brood:
My parents are of the "if I quit smoking today I'll get run over by a cigarette delivery truck tomorrow" mindset, which to me is just an excuse.

I also blame the fact that my folks moved from northern NJ to retire in Bumfuck South Carolina. We had a neighbor who survived esophageal cancer because he had access to the best NYC area doctors and facilities. Dad had Oconee Medical Center and Greeenville Hospital. In fact, I blame my sister's ex-husband, because he moved there to escape law suits from former business partners up here, and Mom and Dad moved there to be near the grandkids. So yeah, fuck cancer and fuck my sister's ex.

Hard think of anyone more directly responsible for the sad state of the US right now than Rush Limbaugh and his kind.

How many Americans are going to suffer horrible cancer deaths because of the GOP’s intransigence on healthcare reform?

Ya. Fuck class. Fuck the “I wouldn’t wish it on anyone” bullocks. And fuck Rush.

    I hope it’s agonizing as fuck. :)

But it won’t be, because he’s rich.

My grandfather ended up surviving the lung cancer, but they caught it very early because he fractured his back and the scans spotted it. It was the doctors and hospitals that killed him after a number of mistakes and then giving him the anti-biotic resistant hospital infection because he went in with a weakened immune system because he was recovering from their mistakes and went to the hospital instead of staying at home. It is an odd coincidence that he actually might have had more time, and more quality time had they actually not discovered the tiny tumor very early. His end would have been just as terrible and quick, but the cancer might not have been that fast.

Of course, that is no reason to avoid looking for lung cancer. that would be like not wearing your seat belt because you heard a story of some person somewhere being killed because they wore theirs.
