Since US cities are overwhelmingly run by Democrats, it makes sense that cities with the most crime would be mostly Democrat run even if there was absolutely no correlation between political leanings of the cities leadership and crime rates. I'm sure you understand this.

With that being the case, it's perfectly valid to step back and look at which factors seem to correlate beyond how they would be expected to with purely random results.

I'm finding the more extreme right a person's views are, the more they insist they are center. These people are so indoctrinated and so immersed in propaganda, they are no longer able to think straight.

The problem with Lanz's thinking is that Democratic mayors are still subject to the will of a Republican governor. You know ... the whole shit rolls downhill thing. Anyway, Republican governors insist on not having any control on guns. So, naturally, in larger cities, where there are high and concentrated populations of poor people, crime rates are higher - and so is gun crime. If Democratic mayors are not given control over their cities, if they are subject to the nonsensical illusions of Republican governors, it's the STATE governor that is the problem, not the CITY mayor.

Or, it could be that people who are “not political” and believe themselves center because they don’t hold with either side, are more subject to propaganda because they don’t wish to delve any deeper into finding the truth.

There are some studies indicating that both liberals and conservatives tend to overestimate the conservatism of the electorate. That's how effective the Right's con job has been.
