FDA has approved the J&J one-shot. The FDA said J&J’s vaccine offers strong protection against what matters most: serious illness, hospitalizations and death. One dose was 85% protective against the most severe COVID-19 illness, in a massive study that spanned three continents — protection that remained strong even in countries such as South Africa, where the variants of most concern are spreading. In the U.S., the two-dose Pfizer and Moderna shots were 95% protective against symptomatic COVID-19. J&J’s one-dose effectiveness of 85% against severe COVID-19 dropped to 66% when moderate cases were rolled in. But there’s no apples-to-apples comparison because of differences in when and where each company conducted its studies, with the Pfizer and Moderna research finished before concerning variants began spreading. NIH’s Collins said the evidence shows no reason to favor one vaccine over another. “What people I think are mostly interested in is, is it going to keep me from getting really sick?” Collins said. “Will it keep me from dying from this terrible disease? The good news is all of these say yes to that.”
This is the dumbest argument against a UHC I’ve ever heard. messed up the quote tag. Can a mod help me out?[/quote] I never said we shouldn't have UHC! I initially responded because somebody was butthurt because vets get low cost VA care but the general population doesn't. But that's a job benefit for people who chose that job. If UHC ever becomes a reality then the only requirement for free government health care will be citizenship - being a citizen would be your "job" and your rightful benefit. Does that make sense?
Our friend & neighbor down the block got her COVID shot (she's elderly so part of the first stage or whatever) and the side effects kicked her ass. Now she's worried about getting the second dose. And now my wife is having second thoughts about getting the vaccine. I told my wife that it's good that our neighbor is having strong side effects. If the vaccine is kicking her ass it must be strong stuff, and totally destroying the virus.
You sound like a spoiled child - “but, but, you promised!!!@ The medical branch of the VA was created so that those who suffered injuries while in active duty military still had medical care for those injuries outside of the military. As the facilities exist, and a way to justify its existence after all war injuries and such decreased, it expanded to include a multitude of medical care for vets after exiting active duty military. It was not created as a privilege for those who volunteered.
IIRC, the sole reason the VA exists is because some guy named Audie Murphy had trouble getting treatment after WWII for stuff that happened to him during the war. Of course, anyone who's served in the military is a loser and sucker, so fuck 'em, right?
No. The way you are presenting it is intellectually dishonest. And will only encourage people to be anti military. Does that make sense?
Absolutely no one was butthurt over vets getting care, you ass spelunker. Only pointing out the hypocrisy of how you and others of your ilk deride socialism for everyone but yourselves in this one case. The idea of not having to "earn" the right to a healthy life is a foreign concept to you.
The honesty is appreciated here, but I'm afraid I'm not qualified to explain how to make it make sense in this instance, least of all because I haven't served I do believe there is nuance you're missing, however.
Perhaps people are missing any nuance I'm expressing. OH SHIT! Is that "both sides?" Judges, let's get a ruling on this please.
I don't see how it's wrong to see the VA as a welcome perk of serving. I also don't see how that precludes expanding VA or Medicare to all American citizens.
I totally agree with your fair & measured response. I said pretty much what you said a couple of times, but it wasn't landing because of the Pavlovian response to seeing OF in any form.
My problem is the fact that America is the only country in the world that has this shitty patchwork of health care systems to begin with. One for vets, one for children, one for the old, one for the poor, one for suckers who sucked who bought the Wendell Potter propaganda that he himself is working towards dismantling. And yet people still slip through the cracks. Before the ACA, independent workers were essentially excluded from the health care market for all intents and purposes. My stepdad has a whole host of medical maladies that keep him at a job that is so far below the industry standard pay for the area because at his age he can't afford anything else. If I move outta San Diego, who the fuck knows if the VA will be of any good use.
Just yesterday my wife went to her doctor for something else and was able to get her first vaccine shot while she was there.
small world, I just took a number 2. That said I'm going the J & J version, assuming it is available when my category is eligible. Being way down the priority totem pole might play out okay because it might take a while anyway for the J & J version to get full FDA approval.
Politico is spinning this as "Biden's team sends mixed messages on vaccine availability." I swear some executive said "you have to have exactly the same number of negative-sounding stories about Biden as you did about Trump, no matter what the news actually is."
Looks like they've changed the headline. (Politico seems to do that fairly often ... I'm guessing they do A/B testing for the first few hours a story is up, then shift to whatever's performing the best.)
