When even one of Canada's largest idiots takes the issue even more serious than American Republicans.
We hit over 1 million new cases in the US today, and the real number is probably higher, with people not bothering to get a PCR test if an antigen test comes back positive and they're not feeling too bad. This is gonna be over soon one way or another. Now that we're up to a million a day, there's only 7 more doublings of Omicron before there's no one left to infect. 3 weeks from now just about everyone is or has been infected. Let's just hope that Omicron confers immunity to whatever mutates next.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC8702434/ Saw this before it passed peer review; didn't want to post it then because honestly most of the molecular biology is over my head, but TL;DR, SARS-2-CoV jumped from humans to mice, accumulated a bunch of mutations to adapt it to the murine lung, jumped back to humans, accumulated a couple more mutations, and the result is Omicron. This is a better working theory than the current one that Omicron was the result of multiple co-infection of other variants in an AIDS patient. This paper seems like it provides a much more plausible basis for a lab leak of Omicron than the original virus ever had. There's no obvious reason that it should mutate so much faster in mice, absent external pressure (such as mouse experiments), and with how much contact rodents have with humans, if it wasn't a lab leak, it seems like it should have happened last year (or in 3(?) years, to match the expected mutation rate).
So ... this is weird. Radio station I listen to on the way to work has "Not Headline News" at 6:45AM every morning. This morning, I happened to be driving through the gauntlet (drivers speed at 70+ mph while one lane of traffic is trying to enter the highway and another is trying to exist the highway) on Highway 41 in Gurnee at 6:45 so I was paying more attention to traffic than the radio, but happened to over hear this and ... naturally had to google it when I got to work. https://metro.co.uk/2022/01/02/nurs...5-day-coma-after-being-given-viagra-15853499/ https://www.ibtimes.com/womans-covi...rsial-drug-viagra-definitely-saved-me-3367946 A woman in a covid coma was given viagra and ... she woke up.

I think I'm on the mend from the virus now. As I said earlier, I am boosted (although I wonder if having had AZ for my first 2 shots and that in the first half of 2021 reduced my protection compared to some others) but it still kicked the shit out of me for 2-3 days. I remain easily tired and a bit bunged up, but that's an improvement on shivering all night in bed and having a headache that OTC painkillers were barely able to touch. Nasty, nasty stuff. A few more days of isolation to go.
