At the risk of taking this racist/trolling thread more seriously than it deserves it will be interesting to see what happens in this six block area both short, medium and long term. While the two are not directly tied together* the city was already looking at pedestrianizing these exact blocks. They are at the heart of the densest residential/dining/nightlife neighborhood in Seattle.

Here is an article from last year where Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda talked about pedestrianizing these blocks. She is one of the 2 At-Large CMs (elected by the entire city, as opposed to the 7 district CMs) and will likely be the next mayor.

    https://www.capitolhillseattle.com/...nd-cyclist-first-superblock-for-capitol-hill/

And this was pre-COVID. Due to rules around indoor dining capacity businesses in the neighborhood have been asking the city to temporarily pedestrianize these blocks so that bars and restaurants could expand over the entire sidewalk, possibly even into the street. The idea is that with traffic down and demand for non-motorized street space up, now is the time to run a pilot program that could not only help struggling businesses now, but hopefully speed up the glacial ‘Seattle Process’ for making the improvements permanent.

So this ‘occupation’ could actually end up speeding up some neighborhood improvements already being discussed.

    :techman:

*I mean I don’t think the police or protestors chose these blocks due to the cities plans but that the facts on the ground led to both.

It is @Marso fake news. The whole claim comes from some right wing people who could not find the area on a map, and would not know it if they were actually there. How can you take something seriously from people who were never there to begin with over the actual people who are there who say it is not happening?

That is not to mention the police presence seems to mean the people get harassed, beat up, pepper sprayed, shot with rubber bullets, and have explosives tossed at them. with that type of protection who needs enemies? The area actually would appear to be much more peaceful and safe without police around. The idea that police are needed to keep the peace from peaceful protestors is a complete lie by people like Marso who want peaceful protestors and the brown people harmed. How will Marso get his daily pictures of brutality if the police are not allowed to be brutal?

The police have become the violent arm of the racist right, and are the tools of the klan and their republican leadership.

    Really?

You may have been a soldier in Iraq, but many of us lived as civilians through the Troubles in NI. I have a funny feeling not many of the Iraqis you were liberating look back on it fondly as a great adventure.

Yup, here we have a human being who'll rant all day about his supposed "right" to a gun, but wants the U.N out of his country because they have on occasion called bullshit on the myth the US is a bastion of freedom and liberty.

    Heh.

Just saw an interview with someone from SPD, maybe the chief, commenting on how "armed protesters are asking businesses to pay a 'fee' in order to operate in the area. This is the crime of extortion."

In a fit of extreme irony, I found myself saying back to my own television: "No, normally you gub'mint types call that taxation."

This entire thread reminds me of a turbulent time not too long ago in NYC. A cop in Brooklyn was running up a dark stairwell in a high rise apartment building and shot an innocent guy, Akai Gurley in 2014... not too long after Eric Garner was murdered by a cop. So there was a lot of political pressure on the cops to just... be better. So the Police Union guy was having a fit. Declaring that the NYPD was "at war" and just completely spazzing out.... Pretty much the same as he is now. So he basically put out a threat... The city would be crying out for them if the NYPD went away. So over the course of a few months, the NYPD stopped making arrest. They showed up for work, went out and walked the walk, but they didn't actively engage the public. And guess what? Crime went down. People stopped calling 911 to report crimes. Fewer complaints were made. The NYPD's strategy backfired.

Well, it appears we might see the endgame of this strategy applied in Minneapolis. We'll see how it goes. :evilpop:

Well, the language they are using sounds pretty harsh, but but the truth is that we are asking way too much of our police. Everything from strong arm robbery to getting a cat out of a tree doesn't necessarily require the service of a guy with a badge and a gun. Instead of having a knee jerk reaction to what's going on in Minneapolis, I'm interested see what actual proposals are made and how they are implemented.

wwe have already seen, it actually works out better to refit the police.

I am noting how the police are needing to lie and pretend people are being extorted when there is no evidence of any of that. If anyone is making that happen we will find out it is the police posing as protestors like they did when they were burning buildings, breaking windows, and instigating violence. We actually have many cases of video proof that it is the cops and white nationalists pretending to be antifa and peaceful protestors who have been doing the violence across the country.

we can just wait for a while and I am sure the police will get caught trying to undermine peaceful activity because it makes them less necessary, and arming them to the teeth a huge mistake.

Interesting that we seemingly have both sides accusing the other of running protection rackets and it's the police who are looking the more deserving of suspicion.

Have the warlords murdered any kids for holding fake anime swords yet? Raped anyone in their custody? Choked anyone to death in public for eight minutes? Knocked elderly people to the ground? Fired rubber bullets into the face of someone out getting groceries?

I feel like I'm pro-warlord at this stage.

    And it is a lie.

No area journalist has been able to find a single business owner that corroborates this ‘report’ that someone ‘may’ be charging a fee AND AS I ALREADY POSTED the neighborhood Chamber of Commerce (not exactly a bunch of anarchocommunists) has denied it is happening.

I am sure you will forgive us for taking the locals and the local chamber of commerce at their word instead of you and your right wing blog liars. How the fuck would they know anything from their command bunkers in their parent's basement?

Do you have any actual proof aside from claims from known liars and people who are not there? Of course not, because you are Marso.
