I can't answer until I get an answer to the question of whether or not their presence is slowing the board down or causing other problems. If that is the case, then they absolutely should be deleted, since they are not the most useful. But if that is not the case, there is no reason to delete them, and doing so is just a "feel good" move to make it seem like something is being done to simplify the tons of smilies we have, without actually doing anything that is in any way useful. If I could get an answer to that question, I could vote in the poll without hesitation, and will do so if the answer is ever forthcoming. Otherwise, I can't even vote "teh Baba," because that indicates I don't care, which is not the case, either. Though I must admit I don't care much either way. It's not like I'm going to lose sleep one way or the other...
They take up a small amount of database space/resources. Not much. But if no-one is using them, then why keep them?
They're used. Look at Muad's signature, for one thing. Smilies would get more use if it didn't look like a monkey organized them by flinging them like poo.
If anything we should be organizing or deleting some of the others. I thought it'd be a good idea to get rid of the flags, but that's the one category that one can actually navigate through.
How many people need to use them for it to be worth keeping this category? If there is no argument that they damage the database, I can't really see why it's worth eliminating access to something that at least a few people do use.
There were complaints that some folks had that they could not use the smilie list because it was too big and wouldn't load. I've already gotten rid of well over 150 smilies no one has even noticed or missed. This is the biggest and least used category which should help clear up any loading issues, that is why I chose that one.
Why is there no grey area, such as "Delete some of the flags" Some are used sometimes, and some none at all. We don't need to save all of them or delete all of them.
Because a few people are using them, and like them. Turn the question around: If they aren't hurting anything, why delete them, when those few people like them?
The slow loading issue has to do with how many smilies are on the default panel, not how many there are in total.
If Tamar deletes the flag smilies, will Muad pitch a fit and run off again because he's not being appreciated? If so, I vote yes.
...just don't snivel when you spontaneously burst into flames. She keeps her own counsel on the immolations.
So basically the drive to eliminate smilies comes from performance issues. Is that the jist? Here's an idea, I know it might seem radical, since we've only been discussing it for a year, but maybe the best way to deal with performance issues would be a software upgrade. Can we just do that instead of pruning smilies?
Is there anything guaranteeing that a board upgrade will fix our database issues? Or are people just clamoring for it because they just want something to happen?
No, there are no guarantees. But upgrading will bring new functionality and we have been running the same version of the software (minus our custom hacks) for like five years or so.
All right. The flag smilies can stay. Geez, there's hardly a week goes by that someone doesn't say we have too many smilies. Then when we actually start to prune 'em . . .
I've actually pruned quite a lot already. But for now we will focus on organizing them first. (That is the smilies in general, not the Flags...those are already organized.)
The bigger issue I that most of them aren't organized well enough to be found...which is not the case for the flag smilies. And most of those have straightforward names so that one could manually type them in without having to search for three days.
