I don't think you're making it up. I went to public school in N.C. and it was the same deal. The Union were the good guys and the Confederates were the bad guys. Also, evolution was taught in Biology and creationism was taught in the church (other kids church...I was raised Episcopalian, and we didn't sweat the disconnect). I wasn't exposed to any nuances until college.

They didn't teach creationism in my church and I'm baptist.

My mom and uncle believe the same thing, my brother even understands how awful slavery was but can't give up the idea that there was nobility in the Confederacy. It's brainwashing. I feel bad for them. Some can't even wrap their heads around it. They've been taught that all their life and it becomes a weird point of pride. It's why some won't ever give it up.

Way back when I was in school, it was the mandatory 9th Grade History. And, like everyone else here, the Union were the "good guys" if you want to call it that, that the Confederacy was wrong, and that President Lincoln was going to show grace and mercy but John Wilkes Booth had to go and screw it up for everyone. I wasn't exposed to any other ideas until I got to college.

In California, there wasn’t much debate on which side were the good guys, but things like the incentives Northern states got for sending slaves back to their owners, that anti slavery did not meant pro-equal rights amongst the majority of abolitionists (Lincoln included) and the attitudes that poor whites and white immigrants had towards blacks weren’t touched upon until college.

True, but I think it’s telling that countries like France and the U.K. abolished slavery after multiple slave uprisings got rich people killed and America just dug in its heels to carry on the practice, and only gave it up at gunpoint.
