Hell, come to think of it they were HERE. The most charismatic poster in the early days of Wordforge we know now was a neo-Nazi, and if he wasn't all the way through the looking glass, he had stepped more than one foot across. He clearly normalized showing the worst side of humanity, and I think several other posters followed his lead. Glad to see enough people were eventually repelled when they saw who these people were over time, and they are now gone.

I think that's a very apt analogy to what the US and Western society is going through as a whole. And I think it will end up working out the same way.

Fair enough. We apparently should have been tougher on the South during Reconstruction, because you're right - it's a lot of the same issues we faced before. I will point out that public education was worse and/or nonexistent back then.

Not a reply to you per se but your post reminded me of this paper I meant to start a thread on back in the spring about white southerner migration and the effects on non-southern politics.

Eyes are a bit blurry so I read that as "The Confederate Diaper" and it didn't seem unbelievable.

There's a historian I follow on Twitter named Seth Cotlar and (when he's being serious and not dropping "bad" puns one of his favorite bits is showing clippings going way back (basically always to the 1950's, occasionally further) that demonstrate that almost nothing the modern nutter is on about is in any sense new. They were distributing newsletters and writing unhinged letters to the local paper with the exact same shit for the last 70 years, they just had way more trouble networking back then.

The truly insane thing is that the predicted disasters are never responded to by the government, yet they still never materialize. Like, the middle aged lunatic in 1956 who was absolutely convinced public schools were affirmatively training all students to grow up to be communists - and THOSE students, right now, are the same middle-age to elderly folks who are certain public schools are affirmatively training all students to grow up to be communists.

She also has a series of You Tube videos covering the entire history of the Republican Party in which the Confederate-ization of the American West led to the current situation.

Agreed, but slowly enough that we have quite a while yet to spend on the ledge staring into the pit of fascism and trying not to fall off. Many of us will be dead before we step away from that ledge (including a lot of the fascist sympathizers but also a lot of us targets too)

I'd argue that it was Obama's election and the GOP's fear of the implications of this that really broke their brains and got them to start screaming en masse.

You're right that many on the left did get complacent that we had done enough and they truly did not get how deep seeded racism really is in this country and willing many are to let it all burn to the ground than to let a black person have anything. The death of the public swimming pool is but one example.

That would've likely have been the case if Abe Lincoln didn't bite the bullet....which is why he got shot. :(

In no other country in the world will you see any monuments to the losing side of a civil war, and you would never see a single military base named after defectors.

I have to point out that that just isn't true. Ireland and the UK are just two examples. Civil war politics have a way of dragging on, and political successors often honour those who were on their side, and even gain the political power to do so.
