Agreed. I'm not deleting anything - just organizing. knowing my luck, i'd delete one that I've never seen used but someone else loves with their whole heart. but I do agree that we don't need 5 that mean the same thing all in the "most used" category.
Excellent idea! And it might be easy to add a target=_blank link to that thread to the 'Advanced' page and the smileys popup.
that seems reasonable to me. yeah, I think I can do that. not sure, but I think I can go up to 99...so I can't have huge holes, but I could definitely make and all #1, all #5, etc...so they all show up clumped together. I don't mind making the thread once I have everything organized...you'll have to ask someone else to sticky it tho. hmmm....I think I was being confusing by calling it "most common" when that wasn't precisely what I was imagining. Is there really anyone on the internet that doesn't know the code for ? if that's what everyone wants, i'll include them....but 50 smilies isn't very many when you're choosing from such a big list....the ones I mentioned eat up 6 spots off the top. I guess it depends on if you specifically want the ones used the most in the past however many months, or if you want the ones that you think the most people want to use but don't know the code for.
Two questions about this: 1) does it require whole numbers; 2) can it be alphanumeric? If yes to either, then it should be easy enough to find an in between coding, especially if whole numbers are not required.
The way I'd do it is organize them into several lists: 1) Animated smilies 2) Semi-large smilies 3) yellow smilies 4) blue smilies 5) red smilies 6) smilies named after WF regulars Some smilies would fall under two or three different categories. That is fine.
This won't work if you want the most used category to be the randomized assortment that comes up by default. It's not actually meant to be random, it's a loophole I discovered that if all the smilies in a category are designated #1, the computer throws up an assortment of them without regard of where they really are in the list. If they are numbered, they will be a set assortment.
that sounds.....complicated. Pretty much every smilie would be in at least 2 or 3 categories. Take my smilie for instance: It would be under "yellow" "large" "animated" and "username smilies". I think doubling or tripling up smilies so they show up in several different categories would just further frustrate the people who feel like we have too many already. I could be wrong, though. Let's see if more people will weigh in. Maybe people will want the "most used" category to be repeats of what was already in the other categories. like in the "emotions" category still, as well as the "most used" one. I wasn't planning on having repeats like that, but I certainly can if that's what the consensus is.
hmmm.....ok. Well, maybe I can do it for all the other categories, but just not the "most used/popular" one that we want to pull randomly.
I got it down to 76 that make sense to me for a "most used/popular" category. I'm not sure which ones to cut or if all of these should be in there. Does anyone see any obvious ones that I missed or ones that are in there that maybe I think are common but you disagree? I specifically tried to not put in ones that were somewhat common but would eat up a lot of space like because I'm not sure if the window that pops up to the right of the reply box is set up to only pick 15 smilies or if it will put in as many as will fit in the space. For example, right now the smiley shows up in my smilie window and it takes up a ton of room...I think it'd be more useful to have 5 small ones instead of that one huge one if it's a space issue. My picks: :lookatme:
ok - I can make adjustments as needed, but I just put the ones above in the most used category for now. Within that category, these are the ones with the highest priority (15 random ones out of these will pop up to the right of the reply window in advanced view): hopefully this is enough of a variety that you don't get the same 15 smilies always popping up, but not so many that you get bombarded with ones that are never used. you can always just click the "more" link in advanced view or the in regular view & it should go straight to the "most used" category. please keep the suggestions coming! like I said, we can always make changes to this...I just wanted to go ahead and get something started. next, i'm going to work on Async's idea for a sticky thread with all the smilies by category since you can now just scroll over them and eventually I will work on the flags.
something nautica said in another thread... that would be really cool if we could do it, but I don't think it can be done the way it's set up now because the "more" link isn't set up to take each individual user to a separate place (if I understand it correctly). buuuuuut......since they are all set up with the correct codes for when you scroll over them now, some people may want to send themselves a PM with all their favorite smilies. it might be a pain to go through all of them initially, but then you'd have basically what you suggested, just in your PM box.
You also can't have the same smilie in multiple categories. If you try, it will tell you it already exists elsewhere.
Personally, I would much prefer to have similar smilies grouped together, even though they would be in different categories according to your list. and , to come back to the example I used earlier, would be in two different categories (since the last one is "semi-large"), but for comparison's sake, in order to choose the particular kind of sad face I want for a particular post, I would like to be able to see them at the same time. And if you throw in there with them, that's even a third category, because it's not animated. OTOH, in a simple stickied, locked thread with posts filled with different smilies (as I proposed earlier), after they have all been listed by category, there would be nothing wrong with further posts that have them by other classifications. Any poster who finds a particular classification useful could compile such a list himself and propose it by PM, in which case the thread could be unlocked and it could be added, if it seemed appropriate.
For the common smilies like and and stuff, maybe make a group called "Basic Smilies" or something like that.
