Yeah. I was there a month ago and must have just missed all the craters downtown. Did most of my regular stuff (no Privata, had the kids) but checked out the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry which was totally rad. Will definitely do again next time I am there with the kids.



All that is assuming there is still a Portland next time I go. Maybe ANTIFA/BLM/Power Rangers/et al will finish their job…

I’m always skeptical of ‘the thing I don’t like made me do it’ excuse. Especially after the CEO of Walgreens (Remember when they had to close 5 SF stores due to shoplifting?) admitted to the SF Chronical that they overblew the numbers of the retail theft.

If only it hadn’t taken someone two years to dig into the numbers and see that said stores were reporting an average of two whole shoplifting incidents a month leading up to the closures.

As for Portland and Walmart keep in mind that Walmart is a relatively new entrant into the market out here. We’ve had Fred Meyer (headquartered in Portland) as our hyper market for decades. They’re bigger, better, cleaner and local. @evenflow joked that the Fred Meyer in Renton was the largest Walmart Supercenter he’d ever seen when we stopped by during one of his visits.

Walmart and Sam’s Club tried hard a decade ago to break into the market but so far have failed in any area that had a Fred Meyer or Costco.

They’ve been pulling out of Seattle and the surrounding area for years.

Looking at Google maps their Renton store is their last Supercenter in the area. It was always their biggest (wanted to go toe to toe with Fred Meyer) so makes sense it would be their last to go.

All that to say that like the Walgreens Exec making shit up to cover a market retreat I would be less than shocked if Walmart was doing the exact same thing. Especially if it reinforces a desired narrative.
