General Mills says that it will ‘absolutely not’ withdraw its Cheerios ad Posted June 2nd, 2013 by Bryian Revoner & filed under Uncategorized. After an unexpected backlash over what seemed to be just another commercial, General Mills decided to temporarily disable commenting on a YouTube video of one of its new ads that features a White mother, a Black father and an interracial child, but on Friday associate marketing director for Cheerios and Multigrain Cheerios at General Mills in Golden Valley, Minnesota Meredith Tutterow stated that the ad will “absolutely not” be withdrawn. http://smokinghotpolitics.com/?p=2699 ********************* A very cute commercial that I didn't give a thought to other than.."Awwww, that is so cute!" Didn't even notice the fact that it was an interracial couple. But on youtube, the racists were out in full swing. Cheerios had to disable comment posting due to the extreme backlash against it.
Racists on Youtube comments? What next, assholes on 4chan? Perverts on Craigslist? Authoritarian thugs on Freethoughtblogs? Thin-skins on TrekBBS?
That's the point. Apparently quite a few people don't like the idea of it at all. And they can't help showing there asses.
The commercial is somewhat groundbreaking. In most cases, families in commercials are smae race. Remember back in the days when when Mom and Dad always had to look 'old'. Sometimes more like a grandparent.
Ya know, I remember with a of bit shame, how my parents would say of mixed couples: "Well, that's their business, but their children will suffer." Assuming mixed-race kids would be the object of scorn and abuse. To that, today, I can only say: thank god Mariah Carrey's parents and grandparents didn't care about that shit.
No, see, the Endangered White Male would be cool with a white male/black female combination. Anything that feeds into his fantasy that all women want him (he's also invariably a gay hater because "they" all want him, too) is fine. Threaten that fantasy by putting a male of color in "his" place, and the Ugly comes out.
Even then, the commercial is a cop-out, since the couple in question never appear together in the same frame. It's easy enough to draw the conclusion that it's the father appearing at the end, but it could just as easily be some unwitting house guest.
Ahhh, so it could be an unmarried mother with a black kid and a black dude sleeping on her couch. D'OH!! Yeah, lets upset even more people.
Just checked...the first thing the girl says to mom is "Dad told me Cheerios is good for your heart." I'd rather not assume that the guy is NOT her father after seeing what she did.
Yeah, it totally makes sense for the guy to be the father. But failing to show him in the same scene as the mother is still a cop-out, is all I'm saying.
Which is sad, that in 2013, there are still a number of people who would be surprised at a couple who didn't have the same skin color.
None of the people in this commercial are likely to rob me, so I don't care what they do or who they bone, etc. Forbin made me laugh! My parents said the same thing about interracial couples, that the kids would suffer. Still haven't seen evidence of this yet, but until MythBusters covers it we'll never know. BTW best evidence yet that interracial coupling is cool has to be: RASHIDA JONES! Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton = BTW she's funny as hell too on Parks and Recreation.
I hafta check with my great great grandparents on that. Till then I'll still eat Cheerios... Honey nut Cheerios.
I can see your point. But let's really ease people into it by going white male with a half Asian half white female, such as porn star Tia Tanaka! For the good of society I will be the white male, impregnating her on the next Cheerios commercial. Because I've had a vasectomy, this may require multiple takes, but I'm sure the producers will understand.
I forgot the product but there is a commercial with an Asian mother and her son. Dad comes downstairs to the kitchen but apparently he has turned into a black basketball player. And the Asian mom is like 'yeah buddy!' And then tells the son to go play.
Quit trying to be edgy. The punch line wouldn't work with them being in the same frame. This was a funny commercial and the racist fucks opposed to it are racist fucks. /thread
How they would feel about this thread about a commercial with a mix race couple and some of FarceBook posters reaction to it. Granma was Blackfoot, Ol' Grandad was Canadian French. I guess Canadians late 19th century were more enlightened than people today.
The upside is most of them wouldn't dare say it in real life so now they can only do it online with fake names. That's some progress of a sorts.
That is a great commercial. Of course black males are more susceptible to heart disease, so I'd say it made that point very well.
I saw a news item this morning about this. Thought it was a joke at first, because people seriously can't be outraged at this, can they?
