I'd say it is a no lose scenario for the company and/or the ad firm.

I mean, they've already done their work and market research and such before they release an ad, but putting it up online gives them free input. Even if it is self-selected and contains trolling it gives them feedback on the ad for free. Also free publicity as the linked article points out. Hell, Mewa might even run out and buy a box of Cheerios to show his solidarity.
