You know, a lot of these problems could be solved by taxing the rich and getting some better garbage collecting done. But taxes and government are evil. We don't want to pay people to pick up the city, we think the homeless should just volunteer to do it for us because they have to live on the streets. Here is the problem. California and L.A. both already do tax the rich. They tax everyone, on everything. Dems just don’t bother with the whole actually governing thing. Unless, of course, it is empty virtue signaling like banning drinking straws or making sure bags get taxed.

Most of that money goes to paying the bankrupt pension system for government employees and setting absolutely retarded requirements so that unions get outrageous pay. I admit when I worked on union contracts I enjoyed getting paid $68 per hour but the fair market rate would have been about $25. Everything gets bloated 2-3 times the prices with requirements of there being 3-5 times more people than is actually needed. Thus the state barely builds anything because the cost of building anything is ruinously expensive.

It doesn’t have to be this way. It doesn’t have to cost government $750,000 to build a tiny 500 square foot studio. It is their massive over regulation, waste, and overhead which drives those costs to such absurd levels. It can be done without cutting safety but they do not want to do it and will not do it. This why they increase taxes each year and every year even though we already have the highest taxes and get the least for it.

Many years ago, I spent about three weeks in the San Francisco metro area. I enjoyed my time there. I liked it a lot better than the month I spent in the Los Angeles metro area.

Look buddy, I do drugs too and you have to calm it the fuck down because you are really getting yourself all worked up over something that does not need this much hate. Try something aside from alcohol and coke for a change. Maybe throw some happy things like pot into the mix. You just don't have to be this high strung. The fact is, most other rural places haven't dealt with it at all: they just buy them a cheap ticket out West and wipe their hands clean. In rural areas, people know people so there's a bit more couch surfing but the resources in these areas are even less than what's here in the cities.

The problem is real, it is worse than ever, and, yes, bad policies are behind it. These conditions only exist where policy allows them. See the part of the video where it says Culver City doesn’t have this problem but L.A. does because Culver City doesn’t allow the encampments but L.A. does. San Diego is the only one where the population is going down because it will give people real help but if they refuse the help there is a progressive ratcheting up of enforcement; we won’t just allow street junkies to choose to continue being street junkies.

Nope. By law Culver City may not ticket anyone unless they have an available shelter bed which that person refused. Also Culver City is allowed to give priority to people who have a history of living in Culver City vs someone who does not. That is how you prevent the migration issue. Don’t allow outsiders who migrate for benefits to access any benefits and have relentless enforcement but do have generous help for the people who are actually from that area. If everyone did this then there would be no problem.

Where Dems have gone badly wrong is they push the false lie that any enforcement at all is some how racist or inhumane. They turn a complete blind eye to the entire problem and all crimes or anti-social activities are simply enabled. They also lie and claim budgets are unlimited and that everyone is welcome to migrate from unlimited freebies. The reality is everyone can’t get freebies because there is not enough money in the world to pay for it all. So the winning policy is a carrot (services up to and including supportive housing for people who finish programs), a stick (in the form of legal enforcement against those who refuse help and just want to be enabled, and limit area resources to people with actual ties to that community.

I hear you but you seem to be tied into one explanation and one solution.

Not everyone wants freebies, not everyone is addicted to drugs, but SF is getting hit so hard because the resources there are being expected to stretch way further than they should, because they are not only looking after locals. Prioritising residents (or previous residents) is only part of the story because you are only looking at the places people are moving to, not the places they are coming from.

Like UH state protections for migrant populations only work when everyone plays their part. If one city is willing to pour resources into finding a solution and their neighbours take advantage by effectively "sending" people there then obviously local authorities will be overwhelmed.

That being said, I've seen nothing on that street view which is worse than hundreds of other cities I've seen all round the world.

You are simply in denial. Most cities do not have typhus, bubonic plague, collera, and a hep a outbreaks. It really is exponentially worse then ever seen before (certainly since the Great Depression) and the public health consequences are vastly worse than ever before.

That is not “oh, you see that everywhere.” The policies of enabling simply have to stop.

I think (from what you've told me) SF suffers for two main reasons:

1) Being overwhelmed by a migrant homeless population (essentially becoming a dumping ground for other cities)
2) Implementing good ideas which have worked elsewhere ineffectively (see the needle exchanges, public toilets, housing shortages)
