As a fan of Wing Commander and the sequels and a fan of space sims in general, you should keep an eye on this project: http://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/ With the technical possibilities of today, this could become a great game. I never understood why space sims are not popular anymore. The opportunities are endless. Because Bethesda will not be making a space sim in the near future, I spent 140 bucks on this project, and I hope this stuff will be big! I'm in contact with the makers and I will help with the German translation. Baba agrees!
Chris Roberts fanboys are outright scary on those forums. If you question anything they pounce on you. Anyway, I have my doubts about Star Citizen. The last time I looked at it and started researching I noticed they are promising the moon and the stars (no pun intended) to everyone. Even if things they are promising contradict each other. The one I saw specifically was "you won't have to PvP to get the best stuff" then later "We need a reason for people to PvP, so it's where you'll find the best items in the game". Also, Roberts seems to have some serious ego issues. I'll check in on SC some, but until I see what it's going to actually offer, I'll remain skeptical.
It is possible that the game will suck ass, no doubt about that. Chris Roberts was a good game designer once, but there is the possibility that this project will be on par with his "Wing Commander"-movie, which was an atrocity... However, as a space sim fan, I just have to give this game a chance and support it, no matter what. Many so-called "oldschool gamers" are crying all the time about the good old days and how their prefered genres have vanished and the games of today are so shallow, etc... Let's do something about it, goddammit! Hey, no risk, no fun... This game will kick ass, and if not, at least we tried... I'm not a Chris Roberts fanboy. I even think that his influence on this project is limited, and he is just a poster boy. At least I hope so. But I am a space sim fan and I want this great genre to come back.
LOL..I see that all the time in MMOs. All the great nostalgia and most of them have completely forgotten all of the old horrible parts I wish they would re-release the old Wing Commander games with updated graphics. It would be doubly great if they could actually dig up live action cinematics and restore/upgrade the quality.
The fanbase of this game gets creepier every time I check on it...it's scary just how similar they are to religious fundamentalists. Blind Faith in their prophet. Donating blindly to their belief. Evangelically spreading the good word. Branding anyone who dares question "the word" a heretic and attacking them. Making excuses for things that don't add up.
With this large amount of cash (40'000'000 $!!!), the devs better not fuck up this one! The pressure is growing. Roberts must be pissing his pants!
This looks really cool. So it's basically a hybrid between a first-person shooter, RPG, and a space flight simulator? Is it in beta? All I've seen of it so far has been the trailer and this hilarious motion capture screenshot of Gary Oldman:
Its in Alpha. Although it feels more like a Beta. There will be a single player game like Wing Commander and an open universe MMO type game
I figure in another three years or so it might get to beta stage. Which sucks because I want to love this game but it seems they night have bite off more than they can chew.
Try it when they have a free-fly event. All it will cost is a 30gb download. Its great fun, you can walk around a space station, request a ship, go flying, have a dogfight, quantum jump to somewhere else, get out of the ship and EVA about, shoot your handgun in space, get in your ship, jump to a station, get out and fight some guys in FPS, then go back to your station. There is a long way to go, but even the bits we have are great fun. And it looks amaaaazing
I'm still a bit leery of it actually happening, but in all honesty I do want it to happen, and I want it to succeed. I used to play Freelancer back in the day, and loved it, and that's with the awful economy and repetitive enemies. If this game is what they say it is, and they do actually release it, I'll be in line to buy it.
