Good thing you posted that here -- he might have missed it being repeated five hundred times in the thread(s) he said he was going to read through.

Yep, I would expect that the majority of original wordforgers had a more than passing interest in star trek. I really enjoyed 09, but sorry, this sucked donkey balls!

I'll read the thoughts and opinions in the other thread before I offer mine up.

Just got my Blu-Ray in the mail yesterday, but I haven't watched it again yet.

Personally I liked the 2009 movie better, which had more of a sense of fun. However, STID is still a solid ride. Yeah, they could have had Harrison be someone other than Khan and the movie would have been just as good. But that's minor quibbles to an otherwise entertaining film.

When I watched it in the theater I couldn't help but be jizzed by the fact that I was watching a Star Trek movie that actually felt like a blockbuster film and not an episode made for the theaters. It was BIG with GINORMOUS production values. The fight on top of the shuttle craft alone was beyond anything that had been done before in a Trek film, and I couldn't help but smile.

It will never go down as one of the best movies ever made, not even close. Still, it's not the horrid failure that the disgruntled Trek nerds would have you believe either.

That's fine. I'm not trying to force you to love a movie.

The problem is, there are other wankers on this board who hated the movie before filming even began... and essentially wanted to impose their opinions on other posters. Not cool.

But hey, you watched it and didn't like it. I get that. It's all good. I won't even expend another thought on the matter.

Dont get me wrong, I wanted to like it. I was excited getting home on Friday night and the wife giving me it as a gift. Nice bottle of wine opened and ready for the movie.....
    Anti climax. :(

I rather enjoyed it at the cinema, but after re-watching on Blu Ray I did think it was a bit of a pile of pants.

Well, got the BR today and will probably watch tonight.

It's a fine space movie. It's just not ST as we know it. Yet we all know how people are with change in general. Change? BAD! No change? BAD! We want the same as always but different!

I wouldn't give too much about what the internet says because the internet is there for porn and complaining. See: the discrepancy between the solid 8.0 rating on imdb (by 180.000+ users which puts it squarely into Top 250 territory) and the whining and handwringing in the forum section, where only a tiny fraction of visitors dare venture.

I think JJ brought the old lady back on track. Now let's have a TV show to explore some strange new worlds.

watched it on the big TV the other night. Not the thrill ride of the theatrical experience, but still more watchable than many other Trek flicks.

I think it was Nova that advised watching this as a do over of "Space Seed", which fits into my "rules" for alternate universes when they deep freeze Khan at the end.

More than anyone, Pine really claims his role here. Old Kirk is the template perhaps, but to take Shatner's version seriously in context requires belief to be not jsut suspended, but expelled and sent to reform school.

^ Pine, & the movie as a whole, IMO is more calmed down & subdued than the '09 flick. IMO the '09 flick was like a kid who wasn't given his ritalin.

For me, this is close to my favorite Trek movie. I get the complaints and most of them are fair critiques, but it was just a fun movie to me. Pine nailed Kirk. Quinto nailed Spock. The "KHAAAAN!" moment was just pure awesome. But I get it.

It never occurred to me that there was some significant feelings of disappointment about STiD until I read on a gaming forum that JJ Abrahms himself said that the video game released in April of this year hurt the movie and that he made a significant effort to distance himself from the game when he saw that it wasn't funded the right way... So reading between the lines, Paramount and Abrahms were at least somewhat disappointed with its performance. Sure enough, '09 outperformed STiD. Paramount was hoping for a $100 million opening weekend and only got $70M. '09 made $76M.

There is obviously some consensus that 09 was a better movie.... Even if I don't feel that way at all.

At least you have to think for a few seconds before STID's glaring mistakes jump at you. ST09 had so many dei ex machina, unbelievable coincidences and outright stupidity that some threw me right out of the movie on the first viewing (usually I only look for mistakes when I watch something a second time).

Still, ST09 is a fun movie too. Stupid but fun.

My blu ray came with that stupid ultraviolet streaming copy that I will never use. Big whoop. A blu ray in my PS3 will forever be superior to some intangible media that can be taken from me on someone else's whim.

Not only that, but if you really must have STiD on your portable device, you can use any of several widely available rippers/transcoders to convert the Blu-Ray data. No authorization required. :diacanu:

I'm currently in the process of ripping my DVD collection (north of 2500 disks) to hard drives, so I can access them anytime, anywhere. When the drives get cheap enough, I'll repeat the process with my Blu-Rays (somewhere around 800 disks).

I'm up to 45 DVD quality movies (I don't have a Blu-ray drive in my PC). Still, I have my own home digital library to watch any time I want without having to put a DVD in the player (the only downside is how long it takes to rip and convert). I need a larger HDD, though. There's a nice 1.5TB Seagate on Newegg for $65. That would be very nice, as the average digital file is between 1 and 2 GB each. That's a fair collection of movies. :D

Plus, and this is the best part for me, if my DVD ever breaks (I have a young niece and nephew who like to get into things), I still have a nice backup I can watch anytime.

Mostly, sure. But then, you can't get a movie stream in BR quality with uncompressed 7.1 sound. Not in the US and certainly not in Austria. OK, you can't get any movie to stream here that's younger than 30 years and of better quality than SEX NAZIS FROM OUTER SPACE Part 12 since our copyright mafia hasn't arrived in the 21st century yet.

Additionally, they make it a hassle to watch streams on the TV. Dunno why, maybe because more than one person can watch :itsamiracle:

So much for legal. Not so legal on the other hand...

Eh... I always redeem my Ultraviolet copies. They come in handy when I'm traveling on business. I can download or stream them from the cloud and watch on my iPad or iPhone whenever I want.... But when I'm at home, yes, my big ass HDTV and Blu ray is the only option. It doesn't compromise your Blu ray in any way.

I refuse to own a fucking iProduct, and I would rather not watch at all than step down from my surround sound and big screen at home to a little tablet screen and headphones in a moving vehicle.

Ultraviolet works on Andriod, iOS, laptops, consoles, etc.... It's only when I'm away from home and anticipate a night or 2 with nothing to do. I can pull a movie from my collection And watch instead of renting or pay per view. Works for me.

Meh. Ultraviolet and all that other digital copy stuff is useless if you know how to rip your DVD or Blu-Ray to MP4. I do it all the time when I travel. Ripping the movies yourself also allows you to control how much space they take on your tablet. High-Quality (more space) rips for movies with lots of effects and 'splosions. Low-Quality (less space) rips for period dramas and comedies.

I know how to do that and yes, high quality takes up a lot of space and time, depending on your hardware. Ultraviolet can be stored in the cloud and it's a lot easier and faster than ripping my own copies.

Agreed, but cloud storage is only good if you have a decent wi-fi signal. I find when I travel, most of the wi-fi signals at airports, hotels and other public spaces are spotty at best.
