Cochrane in FC was pretty damned different to Cochrane in "Metamorphosis".

If people cried about it when FC was new, I don't remember, and, no one does now.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

To be clear, I engage about speculation because it's fun and a stimulating thought process. I also don't care who the villain is, and am mostly excited that it appears we will be getting a well crafted film that takes place in the Trekverse involving a familiar crew. Anything else is just gravy.

That said, I think they would have trouble trying to make Khan the bad guy, because he needs more back story. The Khan in Space Seed had to exist prior to the Khan in TWOK, ergo, Khan would be hard to make work. The best options for a TOS villain would be Mitchell or Gary7.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Correction: This Kirk did not teach at the academy up through the events depicted in ST 2009, and prior to going from ensign to captain.

However, they can just as easily say he taught at the academy after the events of the first film but before the new one. He could have either taken a semester's leave of absence to teach, or he could have taught a class through subspace. They could even backpedal somewhat from the fanboy-annoying promotion from ensign to captain and say "Kirk, you still have to actually graduate from the academy. You're given the rank of lt. But you get to teach."

In terms of being a martinet, eh. Different people have different perceptions. I'm sure many of TOS's crew saw Kirk as a martinet. What Mitchell said in TOS had nothing to do with Kirk being "by the book," but rather that he was a hard worker and a hard grader. "Think or sink" is the phrase he used. We know from pretty much every episode of TOS and the movies that about the only time Kirk was "by the book" was when he used it as a code in TWOK to fool Khan.

I can't help but get the vibe of both The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus's trailers, so the marketing campaign is still in full rip-off more, I see.

Works  That's the style in fashion right now and we had much worse in the past. Trek needed a modernization, it couldn't go on with its 80s filmmaking style.

If it is Mitchell it's easy to see how they would be former friends. Remember Kirk was in the academy and then he dropped out.

I hope it is Captain Garth. Give us a new big villian.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Honestly it doesn't look like it's Mitchell. If it's Mitchell, why is he using a giant gun instead of his dumb ESP powers? It's probably not Khan either, since there is no reason Khan should be giving a speech to Starfleet. I honestly hope it's a new villain, but I don't really care either way if I'm wrong, as long as the movie is good.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Trailer looks cool. But all trailers need is a bunch of action to look cool. So I'm reserving judgment until I see at least the first snippet being shown with The Hobbit.

As far as the villain: I hope don't think it's Khan. Everything in the trailer points to it being Khan, which means it's almost certainly not.

Gary Mitchell deserves an awesome story, and I hope this is it.

Braga revealed just over a week ago that the Future Guy from Enterprise was supposed to be Future Archer (I shit you not). And now he's back, getting revenge on Scotty for the transporter accident with his dog!

*Temporal distortions have given him a British accident because of calibrating for the tachyon overload in his Heisenberg compensator's dilithium matrix.

According to what I've read, they were eventually going to have revealed Future Guy to be...

    Archer.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

That's bullshit. Maybe they decided that later on, but everything I've read says they created Future Guy without having any idea who he was. Which is totally reflected in the sloppy, haphazard plotting of the Temporal Cold War.

Well, I'm not sure that the current PTB would have gone that way BUT it would certainly be an ideal way to play out the "I've come to have my vengeance" theme

    Good thought.

The temporal cold war should have been a phenomenally cool story and they cocked it up just about every way possible. Fuck that plot line, they best not bring it back.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

I HATED that and still do. I'm NOT a conon-tista in almost any regard but the drunk-bastard-old-guy Cochrane was complete bullshit when it would have been perfectly easy to do it right and not significantly alter the plot.

I still say Mitchell. Khan doesn't wear a Starfleet uniform, or have actual superpowers.

Spectacular effects again, but the truth of the pudding will be in the eating.

Well, you just weasel a bit on how many of his god-like powers he still has after coming back from the dead. I guess.

    but it's a valid observation.

Y'know, the more I think about it, the more i would have to give hellacious respect to them if they managed to do Captain Garth and play everyone into thinking it was Mitchell/Khan.

I'm really warming to that idea...

Whoever Cumberbatch is playing, I think he looks like he'll do a good job of it.

    Lots and lots of 'splosions.

And we have the cast repeating the normal cliche's about it being darker with more action and so forth.

Doesn't make for a promising story, really.

Interesting idea, definitely. Also as a curious aside, in the photo of Garth from "Whom Gods Destroy", doesn't that look like maybe where they got the general idea for the Starfleet uniforms from "Enterprise"?
