Dunno, that hospital opening does sound a lot like Khan. Why? Because Progeria or Hutchinson-Gilford-Syndrome doesn't only make young people look older (and makes them die young since it's not only cosmetical), it also causes hair loss. Aaaaaand... it's a genetic disease, caused by the mutation of a single gene. It's not treatable.

Right down his alley I'd say. I can heal your child by genetic voodoo but the price is its soul.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Watching a trailer on YT for STxII Benedict Cumberbatch's character, TEH EVEL VILLIAN, says something about it all NOT being real. Perhaps that's a hint &/or indication xII takes place on Talos IV(?). Maybe all of Abrams' Trek is just illusions created by the Talosians for Captain Pike's amusement & pleasure? Then you may ask WHY didn't they make Pike the hero then, as opposed to Kirk? Maybe in these particular illusions they're satisfying a need by Pike (perhaps subconscious) for the "life" he's "living", &/or that particular "life", to be as realistic & believable as possible.

    Just a thought.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

So, you're trying to tell me that they can disassemble a person sub-atomic particle by sub-atomic particle, stick them in a computer, then reassemble that person hundreds (if not thousands) of miles away, but they can't figure out how to cure a genetic disease? Thus, the only solution is to allow a maniac to do some kind of illegal/unethical procedure on a person. Sorry, but that is a really bad premise.

In a society as advanced as the Trekverse, disease should be insanely easy to treat ("Doctor gave me a pill and I grew a new kidney!"). Even death shouldn't be an issue, since one could pull up the deceased's pattern in the computer and spit out a replacement copy. (Doing so would explain why Red Shirts keep getting killed. They're not replaced with new recruits, but by duplicates of the same 'tard that got killed on the previous away mission.)

There are ways in which disease could become a threat to individuals, but getting such things explained in a popcorn movie would be difficult.

Ah, but they're going for "dark and gritty" this time around, or so the poster and trailer seem to be saying.

I call it's either a mislead from Paramount or the villain masquerading as a Starfleet officer. There's no way the villain starts the movie with that name.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

You're talking about a director who gave Vulcan a moon (which it never had before) and called it Delta Vega (or some such, even though that name was used for a planet elsewhere in TOS). Its entirely possible that they could have glommed onto that character's name as fanservice, and have grafted it onto an entirely different character. Or it could be coincidence that those two characters have the same name.

They've officially said that the villain would be a previously existing character. Might the use of a named but little known character represent a loophole?

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Agreed - either it's a complete red herring, or the antagonist has been caught (assuming this is the brig) using a false identity to infiltrate the crew.

I still say that the biggest problem with the familiar-name assumption is the vengeance motive. How many credible guesses are there in which there's a clear path to the character being motivated by vengeance?

And of those, how many such persons - both capable of being a threat to the entire fleet AND motivated by vengeance - are going to be persons that kirk and Spock will not be able to identify on sight?

Captain Garth, for instance, is such a person but not the sort who would ever be mistaken for "John Harrison" (yes, he's a shape-shifter, but the "Harrison" in the photo is the appearance throughout thefilm as far as we know.

one other tangential point - what if the "vengeance" sought is not vengeance on Starfleet, but vengeance on the Klingons (which, of course, would instigate war)?

It doesn't easily mesh with "you think you are safe and your not" but it would provide an interesting train of thought in terms of sussing out who the villain is, plus it would be a deeper story, in terms of character, than we have come to expect from NuTrek if our heroes' objective was to stop the Antagonist from provoking a war by stopping him from attacking the Klingons.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

    I've got it!

In the JJ-verse, a certain archeological mission got approved several years earlier than it did in the familiar trek-verse. On this mission, a certain former lover of Kirk's discovered a certain piece of ancient alien technology and deceived a certain Captain John Harrison into a compromising situation andswapped bodies with him!

Unwilling to be content with her new-found captainy-manliness she - in her insanity - became obsessed with seeking revenge on her former lover who had, even here, managed to achieve the center-seat before her.

in short, your Antagonist is Janice Lester!

It does make me wonder how this Harrison fellow can make the offer to heal the couple's daughter as described in the showing of the first 9 minutes of the movie.
