    Re: star trek:into darkness

And the more I think about it, the more I think we've become fixated on believing that the antagonist Robert Ocri referred to and the part played by Benedict Cumberbatch are one in the same.

Perhaps this is wrong. We might be trying to figure out who, for example, Goldfinger is based on descriptions of the character of Odd Job. Both characters are in the film, but you'll never figure out what Goldfinger is all about no matter how much information you get about his henchman.

I think I'm prepared to offer the following guesses.

[?=Peter Weller]Peter Weller is playing the primary antagonist: Harry Mudd. Weller's character is said to be a CEO (Mudd's definitely a businessman), Weller is bald (a la Harry Mudd) lately, his role is said to be quite substantial (though unhinted at in the teaser), and he was cast before Cumberbatch.[/?]

[?=Benedict Cumberbatch]Benedict Cumberbatch is playing the "physical" antagonist, who I gather is a genetically/technologically enhanced human and, since his grudge appears to be against Starfleet, I'm guessing they were involved in his creation and screwed him over somehow. Wrecking Starfleet somehow figures into the primary villain's plan.[/?]

Well, last time, the whole plot leaked to AICN, but we just didn't believe it at first.

So, eyes open on that front, keeds.

I'm...trying...to...remain...open...minded. If Bill Adama can jump a Battlestar into an atmosphere, I guess the Enterprise can... go underwater.

    I felt dirty typing that.

I like JJ Trek thus far. I'm sure I'll be in a theater on opening night. But, I'll be really disappointed, and more than a little angry, if they rip that off.

There's no reason that Starfleet ships couldn't go underwater. The deflectors could counteract the added pressure if the ship goes deep enough, and the hull is used to withstanding explosions and phaser beams more powerful than nuclear weapons so it should be able to survive some water.

Also, there was an episode of Voyager where Tom Paris takes the Delta Flyer deep underwater on a planet made completely of water. :shitstorm:

    Re: star trek:into darkness

That scene that echoes the death scene from TWOK...it appears to be Spock and Cumberbatch's character's hands and not Kirk's...and probably at that brig.

If so, it could be someone Spock is close to...like Sybok...who had powers and probably has a major issue with the destruction of Vulcan.

All they have to do is change it so Sybok's mother is also Amanda and he just didn't inherit the obvious ears. Amanda being his mother would also give him more reason for vengeance. Misplaced, but Sybok was never all there anyway.

Eh, it's a thought and speculation is half the fun! :D

Yea, well... if Trek handled it so, there would never be any suspense since Kirk dies, Bones presses a button and a new one materializes

The transporter technology is waaaay too powerful anyway. Thinking about it, it could probably prevent 80 per cent of all problems the various crews run into all by itself. Abrams didn't do himself a favor by making it even more powerful in the first movie. Why bother with spaceships at all when you can simply beam to fast moving places billions of kilometers away?

Maybe Cumberbatch's character is actually TEH HERO? Perhaps all this mumbo jumbo coming out about STxII is deliberate misinformation? Benedict is made to SEEM like TEH EVEL VILLIAN, when in fact he's THE SAVIOUR OF THE FEDERATION (and the Alpha & Beta Quadrants to boot!). Maybe THAT's the TWIST we're all in for?

Love or hate Abrams' Trek, one down side is HAD PB's Star Trek:Strange New Worlds Contests NOT been cancelled & were still around, they'd now have an extra section to submit stories/story chances to/for, the section taking place in/for Abrams' Trekverse.

So now I'm less certain about Mitchell. Curioser and curioser.

As for Alice Eve's character, she's very obviously in Starfleet. Was Carol Marcus?

She wasn't in Starfleet during Wrath of Khan, but it sounded like she was when Kirk hooked up with her a few decades earlier.

It's not specifically affirmed or denied, but in all the dialogue between her and the son, there's never any obvious indication that she had been, and when she asked Kirk "Were we going to be together?"he doesn't even weasel with "we could have ask for the same assignment" or any such thing

Certainly plenty of room for them to put her in at that age. Nevermind they could just say "well in THIS timeline..."

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Because of the altered timeline, the producers can pick and choose which aspects of canonical characters they want to keep or discard.

Was the original Carol Marcus ever in Starfleet? It's never explicitly stated that she was NOT, but dialog in TWOK suggests that she wasn't.

But it doesn't matter much. NuCarol (sorry for the nu-sance) could be in Starfleet in the new timeline.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Well it could be that Carol Marcus and Star Fleet worked closely together. I'd bet that a lot of scientists worked with Star Fleet with the fleet ferrying people back and forth and to things they've found.

Given Star Fleet has an exploration arm I could see civilian scientists working on certain Star Fleet ships.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Yup. Keiko O'Brien was the Enterprise-D's botanist and she was a civilian (because it was really important for the flagship to have an annoying botanist, I guess). Not completely out of left field for a civilian scientist working with Starfleet. Could just be that this version of Carol Marcus decided to join Starfleet, probably because she had never met Kirk because of the timeline fuckery. In the original timeline, it could have been specifically because of Kirk that she left Starfleet or never joined Starfleet.

In the comic books, Carol was in the Academy, in the science division and she went civilian when she got knocked up, IIRC.

Makes sense. Wouldn't be the first baby to ruin a woman's career.

Also, just thought of another female romantic interest who sometimes hung out with Starfleet folks: Kassidy Yates.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

In one of the comic book series, Carol Marcus served aboard the same ship as James T. Kirk and though she and he became (or resumed being) lovers, she was unhappy with Starfleet rules and protocol and already decided that it was not going to be her career.

Then when she got pregnant she decided that was as good a time as any to resign. She didn't even tell James Kirk she was pregnant when she left and only revealed to him that he had a son years later (but years before Wrath of Khan).

Having long term lingering anger at Kirk who ultimately chose his career over her, and later over BOTH her and their son is enough to turn someone against Starfleet.

That's a pretty cool idea, but way, way, waaaaaay too sophisticated for anything JJ does, IMHO. He's a better director than Michael Bay, but that's sort of like saying Michael Bay is a better director than Ed Wood. The bar isn't exactly high.
