Can't go back in time and erase yourself. Can't be done. The instant, the very picosecond you try, you disappear, then instantly reappear again. Total reset. Here's what it'd look like -- Dayton walks into the room with his younger self, raises a gun, points it at himself and then just goes all half-invisible as he continuously flickers in and out of existence. He wouldn't even have time to decide not to go through with it. He'd be stuck like that until his younger self figured out what was going on and vowed never to time travel, at which point his older self would disappear entirely as the timeline was altered by younger-Dayton's decision not to alter it.

Alternatively, it might be a very swift and transitory event. Ever had the intense feeling that someone was staring at you when nobody was there? Time-traveling descendant showed up to kill ya and got stuck in a paradox -- meanwhile, you continued to progress through linear time and left 'em trapped in that moment.

Wow, that's gotta be just about the worst Trek film rankings I've ever seen. The only way you could have made it worse was by putting Nem at #1.

Please be advised that your Trek nerd credentials have been revoked and any opinion you express on any movie/television show/book is hereby null and void.

In broad strokes, I agree with Rick. TMP is better than it is usually rated, TWoK, FC, and TUC are near the top, and TFF, INS, and NEM are deservedly at the bottom.

I'd rate the JJTrek films higher, though. Even if the new films aren't your cup of tea, there's no way IMHO that STID is a worse film than GEN.

A better movie is not necessarily a more enjoyable movie.

    And vice versa.

Yeah, I don't think I'm too far off the general consensus apart from with TMP and the Abrams movies.

Generations had major flaws, just like Into Darkness. But it's a better movie in terms of letting the characters breathe.

Yeah, I should have said "Favorites" rather than "The best" to make it clearer that I was ranking in terms of my enjoyment rather than any necessarily objective standards.

ST:iD is a very fine action film, but the Star Trek name brings certain expectations, and in that regard I was disappointed too often at a fundamental level for it to rise any higher in the rankings. Maybe after seeing it more often it will grow on me . . . or I'll at least get used to ignoring the annoying bits. At this point, my memories are too uncertain to know for sure.

Yes. There are bits in TFF that I like, and bits I detest.

    If you take away the

    1) Destruction of the Romulan homeworld
    2) Destruction of Vulcan
    3) The Spock/Uhura relationship
    4) Kirk becoming Captain of the Enterprise
    5) Make the Enterprise better looking
    6) Take away the lens flares.

Then I can probably tolerate Abramstrek 2009.

Well, the public has spoken. It's the third most successful movie of 2013 so far. That's not bad given it's Star Trek after all.

Of course Trek's 330+ million were utterly trounced by IRONMAN 3's 1,1 billion  Damn Marvel has created a juggernaut there as it's already the fifth most grossing movie of all time. I wonder how much RDJ can ask for before he throws on the suit again. Second most successful is OZ btw. That one completely escaped my attention until three minutes ago.

However, looking at those numbers and how they will double with home cinema releases I have to ask: WTF is it with Hollywood's obsession with content piracy?!

I heard he's hanging up the suit for good. (exception: the next Avenger film which I think he's already signed to do) Doesn't want to get typecast - and I don't see HOW he thinks he's typecast since when he's not in that suit, he's in a Victorian suit playing Holmes.

I saw it tonight and I liked it. There really wasn't anything that took me out of the movie.

I thought Cumberbatch started out being more Khanish and sort of became less Khanish as the film went on, but overall I liked his portrayal and the new take on the character.

Probably the thing that came the closest to taking me out of the movie was the communication with Old Spock. I thought it came across as unnecessary and perhaps a bit obligatory for an Old Spock cameo that didn't really add anything vital or important to this story.

    Well, it's true.

I may enjoy a mediocre movie if it's my kinda thing, whereas a better-crafted movie bores me or turns me off. There was a thread a month or three ago about "classic" movies we disliked.

Apparently he wants the auteur's respect now

Guess every actor gets gets tired of the dollars and wants their shot at being regarded as an artiste.

They're on about making Stark like Bond, so no reboot just a new actor. Now you can get away with that with Hulk, not sure you can with Stark/RDJ. Personally I figure they should just kill Stark off in Avengers 2, and have him give the tech to someone else and do a new take on Iron Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Could get a nice post-credits scene out of that, Stark giving out his will by recorded video "the only one of you capable of understanding my tech is Bruce, and really, who wants to see an Iron Hulk? Bruce, hand down, you don't count for that question..." Could be funny and poignant, and given how IM3 could easily be the end of the end of one story, IM4 could be the start of a new tale.

Back in April i saw that Oz was #1 for the year and i was like "hmm...i ought to check this out!" so I ordered up the thing online and was....mystified. It's not BAD, but it sure as hell isn't the sort of thing you imagine topping the charts either.

StiD will surpass TWOK this week as the #4 highest-earning Trek movie of all time. How ironic.

Before it goes to home video, it will likely find itself in the #3 position, just behind the 2009 masterpiece (#1) and TMP (#2).

    2009 movie a "masterpiece"?

    What a joke!!

I doubt even most people who liked it would describe it as such.

What's more interesting is that, even with the plethora of entertainment options available today versus 20-30 years ago, modern Trek movies are clearly more popular than the original Trek films. :vulcan:

The original Star Trek movies did not have 100 million dollar budgets and 50 million dollar marketing campaigns.

Adjusted for inflation, most of them certainly did.

In fact, TMP's budget alone in today's dollars would equal roughly $170-million.

Note that all the stats I've been quoting are adjusted for inflation. So it's pretty hard to deny given all the facts... modern Trek is damn popular.

    Prove it.

    And

A big chunk of The Motion Pictures "budget" had nothing to do with making the actual movie.

Paramount charged all the development work they had been doing for their proposed Star Trek: Phase II television series to the movie as well.
