He pretty much was, but the important distinction is that he got out of bumblefuck at 18, going to DC, London, and New Haven, all very different experiences than a more typical Arkansan like Dayton could have or understand.

Also, I'm glad Volpone is taking the time to give Dayton the ole reacharound in this thread (and the rest of the board) rather than posting as frequently. It's a good tradeoff.

    been through this before.
The NX-01 is as much an Akira as a P-38 is a Flying Boxcar.

And those of us that were completely new to Trek myself could not have cared less. Sure, Bermaga's collective dismissal reflects poorly on them, but that is at the bottom of the list of thing to pick that show apart for.

The ship's design has actually grown on me, and while it isn't a big deal, it's still pretty obvious that it was based on the Akira. And considering that they've since admitted to that, and that they'd originally just planned to use an Akira straight up, trying to say otherwise is intellectually dishonest at best. :garamet:

And no, the ship looking the way it did isn't a reason that the show sucked, it's just a symptom of it, which is that the producers in charge of it didn't give a fuck, and were taking the audience for granted as an excuse to be lazy.

Jesus tap dancing Christ! Why are we talking about the akiraprise? Obviously the Akira was derivative of NX-01. Is this even remotely worth rehashing?

I thought it was kinda cool when they showed the NX-01 flying in formation with an Akira class ship. :ramen:

No. If it makes sense for 24th century Trek to showcase ships that resemble 23rd century ships, why would it not make sense that some of the less orthodox 24th century ships might also derive from similar predecessor designs. It's a dumb thing to care about. NX-01 looks cool, the failings of the show had nothing to do with ship design.

Why do you keep trying to reason with an autistic?

Why not while you're at it, tell a depressive to "just cheer up"?

    Yell at a deaf person?

Make a blind person organize paint chips?

    Come on....

I disagree. The ship (or station) in a Star Trek series is vital to that series because it is the primary setting for events and in the case of Star Trek the voyages of the ship is the driving factor that pushes the stories.

What if NYPD: Blue had the same characters but instead of the precinct building, was set in a huge Manhattan townhouse?

What if House had instead of a state of the art teaching hospital had been set in a run down community clinic?

    Setting matters.

 I already explained the real reason for the design and how it ended up the way it did - this isn't in dispute at all.

True. I dispute the idea that it mattered. Some of you Trek haters fixate on things that don't matter. If the ship looks cool, then it works for the show or movie, regardless of how or why the decision was made. So let's bring this back to STID. The ship looks damn cool, dare I say beautiful.

 Speaking of fixating... :diacanu: Again, I already covered this, which is that the ship looking like an Akira, and only after Berman and Braga had been talked down from just straight up using an Akira, is just a symptom of why the stuff made by them tended to suck, which was their attitude that the audience was made up of morons, and would just continue to watch anything with the name "Star Trek" attached to it. The only difference from Abrams is that Abrams knows how to polish a turd and sell it a lot better than B&B ever could.

I FINALLY caught STiD today. It wasn't half-bad. It was better than the first movie. It has it pros and Khans (pun FULLY intended:vulcan: ).

Anyway, if anyone here HASN'T caught it yet, it's disappearing from theaters, so catch it if you can.

Did Peter Weller have to be Admiral Marcus? And Alice Eve nuCarol Marcus (UK accented to boot)?

Couldn't Weller's character have been Admiral Kodos? And Eve's character nuLenoir Kodos?

I know WHY Weller & Eve were Marcuses. To tie even MORE into TWOK. OK, I get that.

But maybe in this altered timeline, & now parallel universe, Kodos NEVER became a butcher despot? And entered Starfleet, becoming an admiral. Lenoir Prime had a quasi-UKish sounding accent, or "accent", IIRC, despite Barbara Anderson being American and from Brooklyn.

Kind of gimmicky imo Robocop and Eve had to be Marcuses. Ditto for John Harrison being nuKhan, imo. You could call nuSherlock's Khan gimmicKHAN. And/or SherlocKHAN.
