Youtube algorithm- Oh, you like Star Trek? Here's 50 videos from miserable ugly neckbeards making "pee yoo", faces in the thumbnails! I'm helping!
Today I was walking past a row of monitors showing the four main broadcast networks and saw a promo on CBS for Lower Decks. I don't remember if it was during a soap opera or that horrible talk show, The View.
Probably during The View, since the show only exists to promote CBS projects ever since Les Moonves's wife stepped down.
Imma hold off until I see the full first ep, but the spoiler "first coupla minutes" didn't hit me in the funny spot. Drunk folk motormouthing isn't amusing, it's just noise. I nearly didn't watch Rick and Morty though for that reason so I'll see it through to a coherent scene. I doubt Mariner is going to build a Genesis Device that Ensign StickUpTheAss has to defuse because she's passed out though.
https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/s...tail/11476673-free-lower-decks-duty-officers! Free Lower Decks Duty Officers now available in Star Trek: Online. (Duty Officers are basically NPCs you can assign to your ship or away team that give you minor buffs like faster torpedo recharges, or extra damage against certain enemies)
Confirmation that legacy actors will make appearances, and the tone they're going for is the look of Simpsons or Family Guy, but not full scatological, it'll still be Star Trek. So, you can have stuff that's a natural extension of the universe, like holodeck waste, but not cutaways to Marlee Matlin answering the phone, or a wipe of Tim Allen snorting coke. https://trekmovie.com/2020/08/05/le...-plus-cooler-klingons-and-virtual-red-carpet/
I googled Lower Decks Sucks and found several important videos you all should see. Here's one: Open your eyes, people.
You think THAT'S bad? Remember the time I sang a duet with my shapeshifter twin at Rura Penthe?? *cut to Peter as Captain Kirk and his shapeshifter twin singing Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain and Tennille, for 4 fucking minutes* *cut to Lower Decks intro theme song*
a little madcap/manic for pacing... throwing all the pies and seeing which ones stick. It'll fill the void till Disco is back.
It does, pulled up the CBS All Access app on the tv, first episode is available. I'm going to watch, not expecting much. Looks like they're going to be ~30 minute episodes.
Well... it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't really good either. There were some parts that could have been funny, but the dialogue during those parts caused the joke/scene to fall flat. The jokes and 'funny' scenes felt forced. Less dialogue would have made the scenes funnier. I think that part of the problem is trying to fit too much in a 30ish minute format tends to force all the scenes together to quickly.
It's...fine. I'm much harder to impress, comedy wise, than I once was and I really don't care for mixing overt comedy with Trek (my main beef with early eps of "The Orville") but if you like that sort of thing, sure, fine. I liked the connection between the ensign and the captain as a through line and I like that the humor was loving and not mocking. But it's not really my sort of thing.
Mariner is fucking annoying snd the worst part of the show. The creators are trying too much to make her like Rick Sanchez, but she's just...not.. Otherwise, it was OK.
Watchable but could do better. I suppose there is hardly a pilot in modern Trek history that doesn't fit that description. The TNG episode Lower Decks was brilliant for subverting the paradigm. I don't know, though, if following the adventures of those junior crewmen would have worked for multiple episodes. Same here. Some nitpicks/observations: Mariner doesn't know what a bat'leth is but does know the word cha'dich? It could be that she seemed to be using it wrong. Mariner has served with Boimler on the Cerritos for a year and yet presumably neither he nor anyone else knows who Mariner's parents are? I hope the Cerritos has a counselor to help Mariner work through her mommy and daddy issues. Gary Mitchell is a pretty deep cut for someone 120 years later to bring up. Boimler has been an ensign for a year on the Cerritos, and yet has only been to five planets, Earth, Vulcan and the one in this episode included? That seems pretty sad. I wonder if Commander Ransom is supposed to be related to the crazy-ass Captain Ransom from Voyager's Equinox, or if the same last name is purely a coincidence. I like that the show can include a greater variety of races than the live-action shows do. I don't like that humans are still dominating.
Too bad Federal Farmer got banned just before this premiered. The epic nerdgasm would probably have been more entertaining than the show itself.
Lower Decks is more perfect than God! I am reborn, and I'll never die again. *FF pounds on the ban forcefield like a pane of glass, and muffled screams*
