There is no reason at all why a modern variation on "Where No Man Has Gone Before" could not be adapted for this.

Except that the in-between-quel comic already covered it, and Bob Orci works on it, and considers it canon.

I actually read that comic regularly. I like their approach: revamping TOS episodes with the new cast.

I particularly like how some of the stories have a "twist" because of the altered timeline. The ending to Galileo 7, for example, was quite different than the original one.

EDIT: Oops. Nevermind. Made a disparaging comment about how some folks think JJTrek has no future. Forgot this was Media Central.

The WNMHGB one is *wavey hand*...meh.

At first, the changes start out very minor, (as it is with WNMHGB) and slowly things are veering off in the new direction.

Could be, but I doubt it. My gut tells me that it's an existing name run through the Abrams filter.

The ones they wrote to try to make their movies better since they don't actually bother putting things that would help to make them better into them. I guess they figure anyone willing to actually read the things has the attention span for it, unlike the assumed average moviegoer.

Irrelevant. If it didn't happen on-screen, it's not canon. :bailey:

    Perhaps not canonical.

But also not likely to be similar to any plotline that makes it into a movie.

A good movie is able to effectively get its own point across. The audience should not be expected to read or have knowledge of supplemental material in order to get full enjoyment and/or understanding of a movie or TV show. It was up to the writers to get all of that important information into their own movie, so anything they didn't get into it is on them and does not count. Period. :bailey: Like it or not, the makers of Abrams Trek did not include material which would have made their characters more effective and fleshed out (though its attempts to fill in the plot holes still fail), and even if they claim that this supplemental material is "canon" (because suddenly we care about continuity), it still wasn't in the damn movie and it still doesn't count because of that fact. If anything, it shows that they recognized at least some of the weaknesses in their movie, but that is all.

There's nothing "missing", from the film that I give much of a damn about, really.

The comics are gravy, but, if I had never read 'em, I'd probably live.

CaptainX, I agree: a movie has to stand on its own.

The comics that are currently being produced--while in no way required reading in order to appreciate the movie--are being overseen by one of the producers of the movie. The point is that ideas the comics have explored (such as their recent rif on "Where No Man Has Gone Before") are unlikely to make it into any of the forthcoming films.

Ooh, ooh. You know what I'm really declaring canon? The adventures of my toons in Star Trek online. Bet you didn't know that that the "bare midriff and miniskirt" TOS mirror universe look became all the rage in the early 25th century, did ya? Or that there are customized hot rod ships crewed exclusively by women, being rewarded for murdering and pillaging their way across the galaxy? Ever seen a Constitution class cruiser blow up a Borg Cube? Yeah. That shit totally happened. You're welcome. :diacanu:

Considering we have had a skinny half-Asian play Superman, I don't know if I would consider anything improbable when it comes to casting.
