Looks like they're trying to cast a well known actor in the lead like Richard Dean Anderson was to SG1. Concept Art From Scifi Wire http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=2&id=61531 Hmm.... So it looks to me that instead of smaller puddle jumper type ships they're going to have one large multi-room shuttle. What's with the weird star looking dial thing? Its in every picture. On the console I get. But its on the airlock door and the bridge too.
If this sucks as bad as the latest episodes of ST:A, this franchise is doomed. A pity, I did enjoy it while it lasted
Yeah, well... I said the same thing about McKay before Atlantis aired so who knows? One thing I don't get - where are all these new humans supposed to have come from ? I mean the Anicents aren't even bothering to visit planets anymore they're just sending out ships to knock up planet after planet! That just seems.. wrong. Anicents must be the worst dead beat dads of all time... right next to the new Superman. Didn't they learn anything from Voyager's troubles. This makes it next to impossible to have recurring villians or guest stars. Something Stargate seems to rely heavily on. How many different versions of the replicators can we meet ? Anyway... I wonder how long before they give up trying and have the ship reconnect with Earth. Atlantis reconnected after one season.
Atlantis never recovered after the loss of Wier. For a character who really didn't get that much face time she certainly set the tone for the series. Something Tapping never managed to do.
Dear God, it's a clip show. Didn't think it could get any worse after the dungheap the past few weeks were I need to buy the SG: 1 DVDs. It's nerd fodder that even non-nerds seem to like.
This sounds like the premise for Atlantis slanted even more towards trying to make it into Voyager. In a way it's a shame that they are still keeping the door open on SG-1 DVD movies, as it requires things to stay pretty much the same on Earth. I have felt for a while that one thing holding it back is to really shake things up through a public disclosure of the Stargate program. Indeed if SG-1 hadn't been cancelled I think the Ori storyline could have really gone somewhere interesting through having a Prior or two making their way to Earth and converting a chunk of the population. Some countries would have entirely devoted to the Ori, while others would resist. Even in the US there could be a strong pro-Ori movement. The fact that the Stargate program has had so much secrecy would have given any Ori movement a lot of ammunition. Initially the secrecy of the Stargate program made sense, it was the most top secret program the US had. Now though it seems everyone in the government knows about it, half the countries in the world know about it, tons of companies do work related to the program...there is no reason to keep it secret anymore and indeed it is more and more unrealistic that it would be kept secret. If things were getting shaken up that much it would have provided a nice opportunity to shift into the Stargate Command concept that seemed to be an early possibility for a third series, being able to shift focus onto a new team entirely. That said, I would rather have a SG-1 movie every year or so than a whole new series, especially with the idea for the next movie apparently being to bring back as many of the cast as possible, including having Anderson play a main role rather than the cameos he has been doing.
Well except that every nerd in the world would be storming the SGC gates ! Seriously, if everyone found out that there was one single door on the planet that could take you anywhere in the galaxy it would be mass chaos. Not just country vs country. Every person in the world would be ripping their neighbors apart to get through the gate.
Yep. But let's remember Voyager wasn't a bad CONCEPT, it was the execution that let it down. That being said, the concept does have more than a few production flaws - no recurring villians, no money saving Earth bound stories, no Earth bound ties to keep the series grounded in "today", potential to be a too dark purely survival story, potential to be a too light ignore the reality of the situation adventure of the week story, etc....
Predictions: Relationships between: Chloe Carpenter + Eli Hitchcock Tamara Jon + Lt. Jared Nash Of course, seeing how this is Stargate, when I say "relationship" I mean tons of hints without anything actually happening. Gateworld offers five suggestions that sound reasonable to me (mostly). Personally, I'd suggest focussing on more character drama and bad guys with personality. A large plot arc would help but I have trouble seeing how that's gonna work out with the setting (apart from the "how do we get to control this?" which appears obvious...).
Actually, I've liked SG:A quite a bit this season. Weir was never properly realized, Carter had no development in her brief time. I've seen more growth in Woolsey in 6 eps than I saw in Weir for the entire time she was there. Hell, I actually liked 'young Replicator Weir' more than I liked Tori Higgins. I'm willing to give it a chance. Overall I've liked SG:A and parts of SG1 were great. I'm not sure they've got enough new for the series, but they've done well enough over 12+ years for me to give them a chance.
I just realized another production flaw - no way to bring in special guest stars. Looks like we won't be seeing Teal'c or McKay anytime soon after SGU takes over. Mark my words - less than one season - that's how long it will take to find a way to reconnect with Earth.
^ Uh... across the UNIVERSE ? Atlantis couldn't even call home without opening a gate back to Earth. And those galaxies are relatively close together.
I groaned when I read about the math genius who is also a rebellioius slacker. Gee, haven't ever seen that kind of character before!
For me the franchise lost its way when it seemed to stop engaging its military and science advisors. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but at some point it became 'Shippergate and the quality of the military and science content dropped noticably. I just shudder, reading about the Marine character. Because it sounds like there's about a 70% chance of them horribly botching him. Case in point: The Air Force(?) Captain who's a "Field Medic". I'm not Air Force, so I could be wrong, but the Navy doesn't have medics* that are officers. If you are a medic, you're enlisted--most likely E5 or below. If you are a Captain in healthcare you are a doctor. The only possible way I could see them explaining this is if the character was an enlisted medic and was meritoriously commissioned, transferring into a different MOS (career path). And the Lt character writeup makes NO sense whatsoever. He's supposed to be leading the team or something? But he's the junior guy? How's that work? Is he going to order the Colonel around? The Captain? The civilian(s)? If they're making the Marine enlisted and they knew what they were doing, it would be interesting to watch; the dynamic between a Marine enlisted, led by a junior Air Force officer. Which brings me to my final point: Yes, I don't have a lot of experience with Joint commands and I have NO experience with Special Forces commands (which I would imagine SGC is) but you're rarely going to cut lose one Marine, all by himself. And even more rarely are you going to put one Marine under the command of an Air Force team. *In the Navy "medics" are called "Corpsmen"
Stargate has become like Star Trek. Stale and uninteresting. They need a fresh set of eyes on this franchise.
I still have hope. At this stage in planning, Colonel Sheppard was listed as: Colonel John Sheppard, Mid-30's. A career pilot who is out of favor with his superiors due to his sometimes unconventional methods, he has a secret passion for mathematics. Give them time, people, they usually come through on this stuff.
I'm all for some new science fiction. But I personally think that StarGate's best days have come and gone. Five years ago.
