So I've been thinking about starting to Carry. I really don't know a whole lot about shortguns, but in reading shit in here have picked up some info. Even before now, I've been wondering at the lack of mention of Walther. Maybe it's b/c my father's PPK or Ian Fleming, but I've always had a love the little gun.

Seems perfect for Concealed Carry, but again, I'm just going by the fact that I like it, and c'mon it was Bond's gun!

    Re: Walther PPK

There is zero consistency from gun to gun and quality control is virtually non-existent.

Two otherwise identical guns, side by side, new in the box, never fired. One could be the best gun you've ever owned, one could be a total junker. One could have a 10.5lb trigger pull, the other could have a 15lb trigger pull.

Oh, and while .380, .25, and .22 is better than a stern word (any gun is better than no gun), I'll pass, thanks.

    Re: Walther PPK

I've got one of the old InterArms PPK/S ones and I love it. It points very naturally (along with the reason you pointed out). And I'm less than happy with the .380 round, but I've got some decent hollowpoints for it and all told I'm not particularly likely to need to shoot someone with it ever.

S&W is making/importing them now. (InterArms stopped maybe around the late 1990s and you couldn't get a new one in the states until a couple years ago.) I can't speak to the quality of the new ones. I like that you can get one blued (the InterArms ones could only be had in stainless). I also like that you can actually get the PPK now (there were two guns in the family: the PPS and the PPK. The PPK was smaller--too small to be legally imported, so they came up with the PPK/S, that had the upper from the PPK with the lower from the PPS, making it legal for the US market, but still pretty small.)

Now for which Licensee is this true?

I wanna my father's is stamped 'Federal' but I'm not sure.

    After 2007 aren't they produced by S&W?

    Intriguing.

For a laugh, I googled up "s&w ppk review". I found this and this: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BTT/is_165_27/ai_105698452 http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-31977.html

I was all set to play the punk card on Elwood, when I pulled up this: http://www.concealgun.com/item/10629_Walther_Hand_Guns_Pistols__PPKS_-_VAH38001.aspx . It seems to support Elwood's comment.

A bit depressing. I've been very happy with my PPK/S AND I've been very happy with my S&W 915. So I feel a bit like a kid being told Santa Claus isn't real to hear this. :( What the Hell, pick up a nice used one if you can find one. That way, any kinks have been worked out of it and you won't get a lemon--or at least you can return it.

    Re: Walther PPK

    Hey, it's James Bond's gun. They're cooler'n shit. I've owned three.

I wouldn't bet my life on any of them and, in fact, the 2nd one slam fired on me when I took it to the range to function test it. It was new in the box! I sold that fucker the next day.

But, at the same time, one of my old Sergeants carries one has his backup sidearm and he loves the thing. He's put thousands of rounds through it without one single problem.

It's just totally hit or miss, and I'm not willing to bet my life on that.

I would put at least a couple rounds through it before starting to carry it ya know. ;)

And I've bet my life on faultier equipment.

You misunderstand if you think I carry an AR because I think the AR is the best rifle out there. I do not.

I carry an AR because that's what the Use of Force Policy allows me to carry. If it were up to me, I'd have a Springfield SOCOM II or a Patatrooper Model G3 in my trunk.

I miss my PPK/S. Another gun I unwisely sold.
Never had a bad experience with it, but I wouldn't try to shoot anything farther away than 50 feet, nor bigger than a squirrel with it.

Shoot a drugged-fueled 22-year-old psycho burglar with one and you'll only succeed in pissing him off and killin ya.

Get a Ruger Mk II with a suppressor barrel. Excellent for urban vermin control.

    Re: Walther PPK

Eh. I can't entirely disagree with that. IIRC, the S/F types use them for taking out guard dogs--call 'em "hush puppies". That said a few summers ago I had an experience with my Mk I that made me take more stock in the "have enough bullet to do the job" argument.

I tried to kill a skunk in 1' tall grass. Following along at a safe distance--around 15' and shooting into the moving grass (leading the tail) I emptied my clip without killing the thing. I was wondering if I was really that bad a shot. A few days later I killed a racoon that had been pilfering my mom's vegetable garden. It wasn't a particularly big one, but again, it took the better part of a clip to finish the beast off. Even after getting him out of the tree I put more than one shot into his head from literally point-blank, coup de grace range without killing the sumbitch.

    Re: Walther PPK

Bullets are wierd. You really can't guarantee what one is gonna do just by what you know about its size or stats. I was standing around shooting tin cans with my 10-22 when a 10lb woodchuck stuck his head out of the bushes. I was thinkin' "shit, he's huge and all I have is a .22!" He was looking right at me and I popped him in the mouth. Dropped dead instantly.

Conversely I have hit the little buggers square with .223 and needed a follow-up shot.

However, the two I nailed with my .44 mag lever gun didn't argue at all. :D

So I also checked out the Bersa Thunder 380 and my buddy loves his Kahr so I've been checking them out.

Anyone here with experience with either? The Bersa looks kinda cheap, and I don't like the idea of giving anything to the Moonies, but I'm open to learning more.

I recently bought a Smith and Wesson Model 642 for when I get a concealed carry permit on Elwood's advice. Holds 5 rounds of .38, and also allows for +P ammunition. It's small enough to fit in my pocket (I carry it on me when I'm walking around family property).

Used to have a real Nazi PPK (the long-grip model) with but-mounted mag release. Dad traded it away. :( I'm still freinds with the guy who got it, though.

    Re: Walther PPK

One of the good things about 24 ops, is that I finally got off in time today to hit Wade's before it closed. The internet is nice, but I wanted hands on.

Checked out the PPK in comparison with the PPK/S. Settled on the PPK/S out of the two. Too fucking tired to stay and hang around much longer, so bought another .22 Bore Snake (this is my third in 6 months!, fucking theives!) and bounced.

I'm going back tonight to check out the Kahrs with my buddy and I'll check out the 642, thanks for the headsup. :techman:

    Re: Walther PPK

So today when Anne got off we had to go check out a new place to hold the wedding. Afterwords we met some friends at Wade's to check out some pistols. We're checking out the Kahrs, the S&Ws, then the Glocks, while we're doing this Anne is just meandering around. Finally we get over to the Walther's and when walking up Anne points down and says "This is the prettiest, you should buy it."

And what weapon was it, yes the PKK/S. Okay, so she called it 'pretty', but on the otherhand, of all the guns in the store she just happens to pick the one I had decided on earlier. AND she actually said I could buy it straight out the chute, no haggling/trading (begging  ).

So in 10 days I'll be the owner of a brand new S&W/Walther PPK/S. Hopefully it's a good one! :techman:

Try few different weights and brands of ammo, and try some non-factory mags.

Sounds like a magazine issue, obviously, but you might fix it with different ammo.

OH, almost forgot - if it's new, what is it's "break-in" period?

Yeah, I'm gonna try that, but for now I just want to get some rounds through it.

Could be either, but it's probably too early to know.

To be honest I really don't know. I know for a SAW is around ~3k rounds, so I'm just going off that.

    Wow, 300.

I helped my buddy break in a new stainless steel Kimber at the Range Tuesday. Kimber says for 500 rounds shoot 100, clean, 100, clean, etc.

We shot 100. I went to strip it, and the thing put a boil on my hand! Hot!
