Does it matter? Weren't we lectured constantly during W's term that comparing things he did to the things actual Nazis did was bad because it lessened the actual horrors that Nazis inflicted upon the world? We can agree that the first amendment doesn't prohibit one from saying highly offensive things to people, but we can also agree that if we suggest someone be brutally raped and murdered (or worse), that that person isn't out of line if they punch the speaker?

Someone comparing mask requirements for school kids to Nazis requiring Jews to wear gold stars (or gays to wear pink triangles) is pretty far out of fucking line. Sure, they have the right to say it, but everyone else has the right to call them on their shit. And given the temper in the US right now, equating mask mandates to Nazism is a pretty good indication that you're a fucking fascist. You wanna defend fascists? (Rhetorical, I know you don't. Cruz? Given that he opted to support Trump after Trump said shit about Cruz's wife? Yeah, he's absolutely going to do that.)

Yeah, Cruz has hitched his wagon to facists and traitors, but he tip-toed around that in this case. He's defending an idiot for equating mask mandates to Nazism. We're talking about a political party that has claimed their opposition was running a pedophile ring out of the basement of a pizza parlor (that didn't have a basement), only to have a large number of their supporters turn out to have ties to pedophiles or actually be pedophiles. If you think that the person claiming mask mandates is akin to Nazism isn't a Nazi sympathizer, then you're probably not paying attention to what's going on.

Nobody should give somebody like that any kind of defense. I mean, if someone stood up and called Obama the n-word because they didn't like the fact that Obama deported more people than W did, are you going to say that the person had the right to do so? Even if you agree that Obama was out of line for deporting so many people. Or are you going to say, "Obama was wrong for deporting so many people, but that doesn't justify calling him a Nazi."?

I get that, but you keep deflecting away from the fact that you know Cruz wasn't defending this guy for being a Nazi giving a Nazi salute, even though you're going to let people believe he was....even massaging the truth to make it acceptable to believe he was...which he wasn't. There are times when one can say that a person making a comparison to Nazism didn't know what they were saying and that they were naively exaggerating or ignorantly mistaken. That pretty much ended in 2017 with the murder of Heather Heyer. (Mind you, racists have been murdering people of color for a while now, but it took a white woman being killed to get white folks to understand that there might be a problem.)

After that, well, I'm not inclined to cut you any slack. What media outlets are pumping the idea that mask mandates are bad? Yeah, there's probably some liberal outlets that might be saying that, but the overwhelming majority of them are going to be rightwing ones. These are also going to be the same outlets that inspire paranoia over the idea that whites might no longer be a majority in the US. So there's a chance that the person Cruz is defending isn't a racist (who quietly agrees with Nazism, even if they'll never admit it), but statistically speaking? That person is most likely in the pro-Nazi camp.

Huh? Look, I don't like guns, and I also know that they're not too terribly hard to make so an outright ban isn't the best solution to gun violence in the US. I also know that you've been an advocate for handling guns responsibly. So while you and I might disagree with some things related to guns, I'm absolutely certain that we could come to a reasonable agreement about them. I'm also certain that we can both agree that Kyle Rittenhouse had no business carrying a gun on the night that he shot two people.

So what's different in this case? You're a big fan of mask mandates, and even without them wear one because you're concerned about your wife. You want to punch an anti-masker because they're putting your wife at risk? I'm not going to object (sure violence is wrong, but if someone's posing a direct threat to someone else, then your options are limited). If somebody wants to raise an objection to them, then they're going to have to make a really good case, IMHO. And that's not going to include a reference to Nazis. YMMV.

I would say a Nazi salute is probable cause for investigations by law enforcement, being called out for being a terrorist by the general public, and the termination of employment because you are openly being prejudiced against many groups of people.

Probable cause is not a reason to just arrest you, but it is a reason to investigate you for actual criminal activities. Just the same as showing membership in a criminal gang opens up probable cause to check you out for the actual crimes a gang does. Making actual threats and plotting to carry them out is illegal. If you are just making the salute to be a dick and you are not stalking, harassing, assaulting, stealing from, or killing the school board then law enforcement has no reason to arrest you, but they should be looking into it like if you were professing you were a member of ISIS living in the US.

Making the Nazi salute may not be illegal but it does open you up for calling you out for being just downright evil and not wanted. Wearing a dress as a man, or datring someone of your own gender seems to be an invitation for assholes to tell you how they feel, so if you want to tell everyone you are allied with the Nazis that is a good reason for people to be done with you. If you cannot take the reputation then do not tell everyone you are a Nazi.
