Eh...that's the way it is in the comics. His military background, charisma and leadership gets people to follow him who could smash him. Also, see the list of things I spoiler-tagged above.
Just saw it in 3D. Quite good, all around. I had a few minor quibbles, but I don't remember most of them. The main one I remember is [?="HUGE SPOILER AHEAD OH NOES"] Captain America "objecting" to the use of the Stars and Stripes as potentially too old-fashioned when nobody had said what the new uniform would look like. Maybe the uniform was hanging up in the cockpit ahead of them, where I didn't notice it. [/?] I liked the dual use of "power" to refer to both energy and control. It's a little thing, but I'm a sucker for thematic stuff. The 3D was not flawless, although for all I know it's state of the art. It did add to the movie somewhat, but not being used to reconciling something 500 feet away with it supposed to be happening right under my nose, it also detracted. Thankfully it didn't hurt my eyes very much. It amused me that they hired a whole company just to do that long "end crawl". [edit] No, wait, I thought of a significant problem. [?="The end"]The entire invasion force should not have shut down when the mothership was destroyed. Not only is it Phantom Menace levels of silly to have even your individual soldiers reliant on a strong, continuous link to the mothership, Iron Man's action is undermined, because simply guiding the missile to the wormhole and then cutting the wormhole would have achieved basically the same thing anyway. Aside from sending an incidental message to the galaxy to not mess with Earth, I guess.[/?]
...still processing...may need to write a spoilerrific version here as well as a Shmegalamonga version...
Okay, chilled out by listening to the Chris Cornell song 4 times...now! Overall assessment, easily the best superhero movie ever. ..so far. There's Iron Man 3, and Avengers 2 to contend with... Now, the spoiler-y stuff..
I think one of the movie's few flaws was its failure to literally depict "Scarlett fucking Johansson." But then it would have a different rating.
Spoiler free Shmegalamonga version. http://dickynoo.blogspot.com/2012/05/superhero-flicks-part-65-avengers-take.html
*I* wouldn't say better than TDK; I consider TDK to be a great movie, which is beyond being a great superhero movie. But Avengers is easily the most epic superhero movie, and certainly one of the most enjoyable. I had a thought the other day: Avengers is probably the first movie that gives people who are not comic book fans a sense of what comic book readers imagine as they read great comics.
Yeah, I don't think you can really compare the Nolan Batman series to the Avengers. Both are fantastic on their own merits, but they don't share many of those merits.
Well, they're all superhero movies, so you can't say that Avengers is the best in that category without saying it's better than those, For the record, I thought that all of the Nolan and Burton Batman movies, Superman, X-Men 1 & 2, Iron Man and Chronicle were all comfortably better, with some others probably on a level par as well. ...Although given the orgasms its generating in geekdom, I'm seriously wondering if I was just in a bad mood or something when watching, and if I should go again...
No, I think you simply don't like the same things everyone else likes. I've detected a strong pattern of you going "against the grain" when it comes to sharing the popular opinion. This is no knock against you. Just further proof that everyone has their own tastes and nothing makes everyone happy.
Meh. I like lots of popular stuff. I go against the grain when it suits me to. I'll probably re-assess it on DVD or something.
Although....if one wanted to find a way to compare Avengers and TDK....Avengers has more Oscar winners in it I think....
It really depends on what criteria you're going to use to evaluate what makes a great superhero movie, and how you rank them. Special effects? Themes? Acting? Plot? Action? Humor? Characters? Quotable lines? Do you grade on a curve because Avengers by luck of being made in 2012 has obviously better special effects than, say, Superman? For me, Avengers was far more epic in scope than any of the movies you've named (well, I haven't seen Chronicle, but from what I saw of the commercial I assume that is true.) It handles its characters better than most of the ones on the list, the plot holes are not any more glaring than any others in the genre, the acting is generally better, and while it's not as deep as the Nolan Batman movies, there's still some philosophy there. Also, it's substantially funnier.
I can't WAIT to see it. We almost always buy all the super hero movies so might as well wait until it comes out on Blu-ray and get it
Who? I don't know of any in The Avengers. I count 4 winners in TDK: Caine (Hannah & Her Sisters), Freeman (Million $ Baby), Bale (The Fighter), and Ledger (TDK).
You forgot Marion Cotillard, who is also an Academy Award winner (Best Actress, 2008, La Vie in Rose).
I see her listed in the cast of TDKR, but not for TDK. Did I miss her? BTW, I'm watching her in Contagion right now
Oh, and, for all the folks that said "I wanted to see more of Cap being a fish out of water", 1.) the Avengers DVD is going to have deleted scenes with some of that 2.) the post-Avengers sequels will chronologically come after Avengers, and Cap 2 will be all about that.
They're gonna oversaturate it if they keep making Iron Man/Captain America/Hulk sequels. Just keep that budget for Avengers sequels, unde Whedon's control.
Ehh...I dunno, would you get fatigued with "The Walking Dead", if the episodes came out once a year? Quite the opposite, you'd be jonesing. Think of it as a show.
