Released in the UK yesterday. I saw it last night. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed the cinema as much - not just an excellent film but the gasps and laughs of the audience added to the whole experience. I'm not a fan of 3D but this was the best use of the format since Avatar. The film has three distinct parts - getting the band together, their time at SHIELD's 'HQ' and finally the attack on NY. While visually stunning it didn't feel like an event movie, like the Transformers films, until that final act. This allows Whedon to do what he does best and make it about the characters' interactions which are largely funny but also - as is Whedon's way - tragic. Everyone gets their share of brilliant one-liners and screen time, although I could have done with some more of Thor. Downey Jr. is excellent as expected but doesn't overshadow the others, allowing Evans to take the leadership role, Hiddleston to camp it up and for Ruaffalo to steal the show. For a Whedon fanboy like me this is him finally proving to the public what we've always said about him; for Whedon haters this might just change their mind. Can't wait to see it again.
You get it first? You bastards!!!!! I can't wait to see it. The advanced reviews have been awesome, and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun.
Just came back from seeing it as well and fully agree with Hood - a masterpiece. I was thoroughly entertained and yet it didn't feel like a mindless action flick either. Plenty of heart to go round.
Quitcherbitchin! We are desperate to see it (well, at least 3 out of the 4) and there's no reasonable possibility we'll be able to afford it barring something wildly unexpected. Try contemplating having to wait on the DVD and count your blessings. :/
Mediocre. Some good one liners, but in a two and a half hour film, that's not enough. There's no plot, and Loki is a poor villain. Only Scarlett Johannsen's outfit kept me interested.
We got it here in Chile too. Saw it tonight. I liked it better than any of the individual Marvel superhero movies, but not as much as Iron Man 2. They seemed to give Tony Stark the biggest role, though, which was a good call. Thumbs up.
A theater here is showing all the buildup movies in a marathon and premiering The Avengers at midnight friday, so, 6 movies for $20, awesome deal
Same deal in Meridian ID near where I live, except they only charge for the Avengers ticket- package deal for about 9$, not including all the goodies you are going to consume over a day-long marvel movie marathon. I'll be on the road so I'll miss it, but if I was home I'd be tempted, just for fun.
FUCKING HELL THAT WAS AWESOME. Just got back from seeing it in 3d, and absolutely freaking incredible movie. Not perfect at times because of some stretches of the imagination, but it's about a team of superheros so you should have a fair amount of disbelief quelled going in. When it finished both me and the friend I was with stood up and realised our legs were sore because neither of us had fidgeted or moved the entire movie, there wasn't a point when it wasn't entertaining.
Just got back from seeing it at a sneak preview. I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable, perhaps the best comic book movie ever. One of the good things about the fact that there have been movies for Iron Man, Thor, Cap and the Hulk is that they don't have to spend a tremendous amount of time on backstories for each. I think everyone got their moment to shine. It was pretty amazing to have all these different characters in the movie and have no one get shortchanged. Lots of action, lots of humor. Quite a few character moments. And don't leave before the credits. I'm sure there's plenty to nitpick about it but I probably will see it at least one more time in the theater and almost certainly will buy the DVD.
I just found a couple of movie passes and a theater gift card I got as presents years ago. It's a sign.
HOLY CREAMED CHIP BEEF ON TOAST!!!!! Just got home from seeing it and this is everything we've always wanted in a superhero movie. And there are two easter eggs at the end - one during and one at the end of the end credits. I won't post a spoiler, even behind tags, but HOLY SHIT what a set-up for a sequel! Giggity giggity goo!!
^^ Valid point. The...alternative...method we employed tonight was, if you have any experience you know, sadly lacking in audio quality, so I look forward to clearing up a lot of exposition on the DVD but with that caveat, a few very minor quibbles bugged me, none took me out of the movie that much except this: You are a virtual demi-god badass world threatening supervillain and you make your initial escape....standing in the back of a jeep? But lest i seem dissatisfied, I thought overall it was great fun and for meta-geek satisfaction, I particularly enjoyed the several times when Joss turned the "villain's love to monologue" meme on it's head (particularly the one with Hulk)
Caught this one twice: once last night at 12:01am and today at 3:45pm. Awesome, just awesome. Great character moments, terrific humor, and an appropriate grandness of scale for a team of superheroes. Not the greatest superhero movie of all time, but certainly the most epic. And, damned, if they didn't finally get the Hulk right.
Great minds think alike? That's the explanation I whipped out of my ass last night to give to the wife. I was wondering if there was anything more out there.
Going to see it tonight. Have to drag my six year old to a 8:30 show which means he won't be in bed until after midnight, because my wife will be pissed if I go see it without her. I'm officially either the worst or best dad ever.
I accidentally clicked one of the spoilers. Luckily I averted my eyes and scrolled down before I saw it.
Can be repeated often enough. both Banner and Hulk were note-for-note perfection. I don't see how it could be done better.
Re your third point - you didn't catch the moment between him and Thor? Also, on your second point - that was what i was referring to about sort of spoofing the "bad guys love to monologue" meme.
