Re-gendering someone's child without their knowledge or consent cannot in good faith be compared to merely using a nickname. I bet you'd all be pissed if some teacher secretly indoctrinated your kid into a religion or political affiliation you dislike.

So it's fine to use a nickname, so long as the teacher feels the name still accurate conveys whether the student has a penis or vagina, got it.

right thing, wrong reason. I have seen teachers make up horrible nicknames for kids and promote the class using them. The most likely reason a teacher would be held accountable is for giving a male student a female nickname to shame them for not being physical enough. Given the number of asshole teachers who would do that compared to the number of trans kids, I wouls say the law could actually be good if the child were to complain to make it be used against the teacher. How many teachers have given kids with ethnic names nicknames because they couldn't pronounce the kid's name? my parents named me and my sister with odd names and teachers and admin constantly did that sort of thing. My name is fucking 5 letters and real easy to pronounce and teachers still decided their own version of it.
