This was an entirely worthwhile thread...one of the better ones in recent weeks.

It's the WF equivalent of Obama's speech :soma:

True, though to be honest, his "typical white person" comment yanked most of the goodwill (no, not support) he had from me, and the wife, who had cast her primary vote for him.

Yes, every word that came out of his mouth (bouncing off of his foot on the way) after the speech undid a little bit of the speech.

The Wright debacle was like someone shaking a snowglobe. His speech was in essence taking it back and setting it back down. But he cant control how fast the snow inside settles down, and he's foolish to try. He'll just have to wait it out.

    Yeah, I noticed that too.

Come to think of it, she hasn't defended either of them.

And she IS a Obama supporter.

That part threw me the first time I read it. Actually, it threw me the first three times I read it. The fourth time, I interpreted it as "Whitey's gonna try to hold you down! Don't fall for it!"

I'll quote each part, say what I took it to mean, and throw in some commentary.
Translation : Whitey's gonna try to hold us down, and prevent the best of us from making it!

Commentary: The language they're using makes it sound like they're under attack. It's not a productive start, but I'm interested in seeing what they propose the black community do in response.

Translation : Whitey's gonna kill black leaders, or trick us into killing each other!

Commentary: Well... whitey did kill at least one black leader, Martin Luther King Jr. I can see why they'd be a bit paranoid after that. Hell, even white people are worried Obama's going to get assassinated. As for "a social system that encourages black leaders to kill off one another," all I can think of are the "rap wars." I don't think that really counts, unless someone can convince me Tupac was going to become the next Bill Cosby. That one's a bit overblown.
Translation: I don't think this one needs translation.

Commentary: According to the New York Times article I just googled, 1 in every 91.1 American adults is in jail right now. For blacks, that number is 1 in 15, and for black men between the ages of 20-34, the number is 1 in 9. Now you can say "Black men commit more crimes, that's why they're in prison," but when they're incarcerated at a rate ten times higher than the general population, there's got to be something else going on there.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/28/us/28cnd-prison.html

Translation: Whitey's gonna make you want to turn your back on the black community!

Commentary: I don't think it's a singularly black phenomenon for people to reach the top, then forget their roots. They want to encourage successful blacks to retain ties to the community from which they came, which sounds fine to me.

Translation: I had no idea what this meant, so I googled it. Apparently, it means it's okay to strive for material success, but that material success shouldn't necessarily become the sole driving motivation in your life.

Commentary: No problem there. It'd be nice if more people were more interested in being leaders than making money.

Here's the article I found. It's from last year, and it's even got some Obama quotes in it.

To me, it comes down to this: Is it OK to tolerate racism in the black community because of the way they were treated in the past?

Because clearly if a white church had the same structure as Trinity did, looking out for white interests, only accepting white leadership, avoiding the oppression of the other races against their true white heritage, they would be called out as members of the Klan.

My answer is no. You want equality, then you best be prepared to accept what it means - which is equal treatment across the board.

    Fair enough.

Do they have equality? They'd probably argue they don't.

Exactly. But, part of the problem that we have now, as has been seen here at WF is that some people aren't willing to admit that what Wright has done, as well as his replacement is racism.

Depends on who you are defining in 'they.'

The black community I'd imagine has a pretty diverse outlook on that.

Certainly there is legal equality. If anything, there's a slight advantage to being a minority in our current society in legal terms. You literally have more rights.

There's disparity in economic equality, because they have been deprived rights that whites enjoyed for centuries.

The Trinity folks I'm sure would argue they don't have equality.

After all, didn't Reverend Wright say there would never, ever be a black president?

Looks like he's done more to achieve that goal than any clan member could have.

Michael Moore hates America. Does that make him racist? I dunno. Does that make him a treacherous douchebag? Partly.
Are you implying that the typical Black Person is ignorant? :marathon:
Everyone's a little bit racist, sometimes.

That doesn't mean we go around committing hate crimes.

I can tell you how this works in my town, which may (or may not) reflect what happens across the board. Richmond County is just about split 50-50 black and white. 95 percent of the things that pretty much send someone to prison (armed robbery, shooting, stabbing, car jacking, etc) are commited by blacks. Logic would dictate more blacks than whites end up incarcerated. I just can't see how "the system" is deliberately targeting anyone unless they ignore white people pulling out a gun and robbing the KFC or 7/11.

Personally, I believe that when anyone commits a crime, they deserve exactly what they get, regardless of skin color.

But when blacks and hispanics get harsher sentences for the same crime a white person did, it's hard for me to believe there isn't some sort of double standard in our country.

Broadway musical from a couple years back. With puppets. It had a "Sesame Street" sort of vibe--"Avenue Q".

The two best numbers from it were "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" and "The Internet is for Porn". :shades:
